Forty-first Chapter: The Characteristics of Non-retrogression. Forty-first Chapter: The Characteristics of Non-retrogression. Furthermore, Subhuti, when evil demons come near Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas and try to reverse their faith, and so on, up to the point of saying that Bodhisattvas will engage without fault, it is taught that evil demons nominally label all dharmas as empty. Thus, since all dharmas are empty by nature, what is there to achieve enlightenment? In this way, they try to reverse the faith and belief of Bodhisattvas. Therefore, the instruction is given to prevent demons from taking advantage. In the ultimate sense, all dharmas are like the sky, and although they are empty by nature, in the conventional sense, the fruits of whatever good or bad deeds are committed are not non-existent. Therefore, I will achieve complete enlightenment in the all-knowing state and gradually establish all sentient beings in the unsurpassed, perfectly complete Bodhi. Generate this thought and keep your mind firm so that demons cannot overcome you. This is what is taught. Then, the Venerable Subhuti asked the Blessed One, and so on, which indicates that the Bodhisattva has obtained the tolerance of non-arising dharmas and abides in the ground of non-retrogression. It also shows the transformation from the grounds of Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, or after regressing from the grounds of Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, obtaining the tolerance of non-arising dharmas, and transforming into a non-retrogressing Bodhisattva. "Blessed One, why is a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who does not regress called non-regressing?" This is asking whether that Bodhisattva is called non-regressing because he does not regress from the grounds of Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Then, can a regressing Bodhisattva be called non-regressing? This is asking whether someone who regresses from the grounds of Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas can be called non-regressing. The Blessed One replied, "Subhuti, a non-regressing Bodhisattva is called non-regressing." This means that the Bodhisattva obtains the non-arising

Because it is a reversal from the ground of the Pratyekabuddha, it is shown that it is called irreversible. A Bodhisattva who is irreversible is called irreversible, which means that when a Bodhisattva reverses from the ground of the Hearer and the Pratyekabuddha, at that time he obtains the forbearance of non-arising Dharma, and because he abides in the irreversible ground, it is called irreversible. Asked: Blessed One, for what reason is a Bodhisattva who does not reverse called irreversible, and for what reason is a Bodhisattva who reverses called irreversible? This is to clearly explain the meaning briefly explained above, asked by Subhuti. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, if a Bodhisattva reverses from the ground of the Hearer or the ground of the Pratyekabuddha, then, Subhuti, this is a reversing Bodhisattva, called an irreversible Bodhisattva. It means that if a Bodhisattva obtains the forbearance of non-arising Dharma, and reverses from the ground of the Hearer and the Pratyekabuddha, then, because he reverses from the ground of the Hearer and the Pratyekabuddha, he is also called an irreversible Bodhisattva, and because he does not reverse from the unexcelled perfect enlightenment, he is also called an irreversible Bodhisattva. Subhuti, if a Bodhisattva does not reverse from the ground of the Hearer or the ground of the Pratyekabuddha, then, Subhuti, this is an irreversible Bodhisattva, called reversible. It means that if a Bodhisattva does not reverse from the ground of the Hearer and the Pratyekabuddha, then, it is also established as irreversible, but those will reverse from the unexcelled perfect enlightenment, therefore, they are not included in the irreversible. Subhuti, with those aspects, those ways, those characteristics, until the evil demon cannot from the unexcelled perfect enlightenment

That which does not revert from the Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment, is deceived by the evil demon, and cannot be turned back from the Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment, that is what is to be explained. Shariputra, furthermore, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva who does not revert, if he wishes to enter the first dhyana, and even if he wishes to deliberately focus his mind and completely hold his body, to do things for sentient beings with body and speech, like this holding the body, what is to be explained in between is that the Bodhisattva has skillful means and wisdom, in order to be completely familiar and accustomed to all dharmas, the four dhyanas, the four immeasurables, the four formless absorptions, the cessation absorption, the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, the three doors of liberation, even if he enters and attains the five superknowledges, he becomes familiar and accustomed to these for the benefit of sentient beings, not like the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, not completely grasping these fruits, if he holds the body by which he tames sentient beings, then he should recognize that he is a non-reverting Bodhisattva by those signs and marks. Shariputra, furthermore, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva who does not revert has the thought of enlightenment, and even walks with mindfulness, and sleeps with mindfulness, what is to be explained in between is that the Bodhisattva has skillful means and wisdom, thinks of the Unsurpassed Enlightenment, and having the signs and marks of a Bodhisattva, practices all the pure dharmas such as the six perfections, but does not cling to those signs, nor is he attached, then he should recognize that he is a non-reverting Bodhisattva by those signs and marks, not being attached, that is, even if he practices color and perfect signs, etc., because he realizes that those are without substance in the ultimate sense, so he does not cling to those signs, nor does he practice with attachment, that is what is to be expressed. Shariputra, furthermore, if the Bodhisattva Mahasattva who does not revert, is at home
