Or, up to "the suchness of enlightenment is not truly seen," it shows the reason why all dharmas do not depend on others. Because it is realized that all dharmas such as form, and the suchness of these dharmas, are not real in the ultimate sense, so these dharmas are not dominated by anything, that is the meaning. Subhuti, moreover, from "the evil demon comes in the form of a mendicant before the Bodhisattva Mahasattva" to "omniscience," such practice is that there is no place or time where the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment is not manifested, if one thinks that it is not a place. The evil demon takes the form of a mendicant, and tells the Bodhisattva about the impure path of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, as well as the four dhyanas, the four immeasurables, and the four formless absorptions, and makes them attain the four fruits of the Hearers by this path, and makes them completely pacified, preaching the path of the Small Vehicle, and slandering the Great Vehicle to deceive. The Bodhisattva serves and reveres as many Tathagatas as the sands of the Ganges, perfects the six paramitas to as many Tathagatas as the sands of the Ganges, and after serving as many Tathagatas as the sands of the Ganges, when practicing the six paramitas and so on up to omniscience, he asks and observes how to abide in these dharmas, even if the demon pierces his heart with the words "you will not attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment," his heart will not be discouraged. The evil demon transforms into many monks, saying that these monks are also only entering into unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, and these people have not achieved unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, but abide in the Arhat fruit, do you still expect to attain unsurpassed enlightenment like you? Even if he says so, if he cannot be deceived, know that this is irreversible.

Thus it is taught. Furthermore, Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who does not turn back practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he thinks thus: If, as the Tathagata has said, he learns and practices in this way, not departing from it, and with those mental activities that are in accordance with the Perfections, then that practice does not fall away from the Perfection of Giving, and even if someone knows it is the work of Mara, he does not fall away from unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment. If he thinks thus, he cannot be deceived by Mara, and for all the Dharmas from the six Perfections up to the All-Knowingness, he learns and practices as the Tathagata has said. If he knows it is the work of Mara, and thinks that he does not fall away from unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment, then by those signs also he should be known as not turning back. Thus it is taught. When this was said, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One, and up to the point of not turning back from the thought of the Buddha, the name "not turning back" is a nominal designation. If there is a turning back, then there is the name "not turning back." From what Dharmas does the nominal designation of not turning back arise? After Subhuti asked, if one turns back from the thought of seeing all Dharmas such as form as having substantiality, then he has obtained the acceptance of the non-arising of Dharmas, and it should be known that he does not turn back. Thus it is taught. Why is that? Because, like this, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who does not turn back, all Dharmas are empty of their own nature, and up to the point where he is a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who does not turn back and has obtained the acceptance of the non-arising of Dharmas, it shows the reason for turning back from the thought of seeing all Dharmas as having substantiality. Because that Bodhisattva realizes that all Dharmas are empty of their own nature, he enters the first faultless Bodhisattva ground. Having entered the first ground, in ultimate reality, all Dharmas, even as much as a particle, are without any object of focus.

Because of realization, one does not cling to anything as manifest. Because one does not cling to anything as manifest, one does not generate any dharma. Therefore, it is called obtaining forbearance of the dharma of non-arising. Having obtained forbearance of the dharma of non-arising in this way, one should understand it as irreversible. Thus it is taught. The fortieth chapter of the extensive commentary on the Hundred Thousand Verses of the Perfection of Wisdom is complete. Fortieth Chapter: The chapter showing the signs of the path of application.
