Chapter Forty: Showing the Signs of the Path of Application Chapter Forty: Showing the Signs of the Path of Application Having spoken thus, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One, and so forth, which was discussed from the occasion when the Bodhisattva was previously said to be irreversible. If there is no irreversibility in the ultimate sense, what is the characteristic of irreversibility? Thus, in the conventional sense, what is the characteristic of a Bodhisattva who does not regress? In order to explain in detail the characteristics of a Bodhisattva who does not regress, Subhuti asked, and the Blessed One explained in detail the characteristics of irreversibility. Blessed One, what is the aspect of a great being, a Bodhisattva who does not regress? What is the manner? What is the sign? How should we know that this great being, a Bodhisattva, is irreversible? The so-called aspect, manner, and sign are the names of the signs that manifest by which conduct one can know that this is an irreversible Bodhisattva. Subhuti, all those that are spoken of as the ground of ordinary beings, the ground of Hearers, the ground of Solitary Buddhas, the ground of Bodhisattvas, and the ground of Tathagatas, are immutable in Suchness, without discrimination, without duality, and without being made into duality. That is, in the ultimate sense, all dharmas are of one taste in the nature of Suchness, and do not change from Suchness. Therefore, the aspects, manners, and signs of the grounds of ordinary beings, Hearers, Solitary Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Tathagatas are said to be without distinction. It enters into Suchness as it is, and does not discriminate Suchness. Thus, it enters without discrimination, and one who enters thus, having heard Suchness as it is, transcends it. They have no doubt about Suchness, whether it is one, two, or neither. That Bodhisattva who does not regress is also, in the ultimate sense,

Having heard and understood that all dharmas are of one taste, without any distinction, and without any discrimination or attachment to characteristics, and without any doubt, thus, not clinging to characteristics and not doubting is the aspect, manner, and sign of a bodhisattva who does not turn back. This is what was taught. This is not spoken randomly, but speaks with meaning, not speaking without meaning. Not looking at what others have done or not done, but seeking good speech, this is the aspect, manner, and sign of revealing a bodhisattva who does not turn back through the door of speech. Not speaking meaningless chatter randomly, not mocking others, not being jealous of others' good deeds, but praising their qualities, if one can do so, then by these aspects, manners, and signs, one should recognize that they are a bodhisattva who does not turn back. Question: Blessed One, with what aspects, what manners, and what signs should a bodhisattva mahasattva be recognized as not turning back? This is asked by Subhuti in order to distinguish the context in which all dharmas are taught as being without aspects, manners, and signs in the ultimate sense. The Blessed One replied: Subhuti, all dharmas are without aspects, without manners, and without signs. This is also just a conventional teaching of the aspects, manners, and signs of a bodhisattva who does not turn back. In the ultimate sense, they are empty of inherent existence, and because there is no entity, there are also no aspects, manners, and signs in the absence of an entity. This is the meaning. Question: Blessed One, if all dharmas are without aspects, without manners, and without signs, from which dharma is the non-turning back of a bodhisattva mahasattva who turns back shown? This is because the term "non-turning back" is established by opposition. If there is "turning back," then "non-turning back" can be established by its opposition. Thus, if all dharmas are empty of inherent existence, without aspects, manners, and signs, then since there is no way to establish "turning back" and "non-turning back," what intention do you have in saying
