Thus, Subhuti's inquiry about the meaning of non-retrogression is complete. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, how is a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva called non-retrogressing? And how is a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva known as non-retrogressing? It means not being attached to all dharmas such as form, not establishing names and signs, not dwelling in them, and not turning away from them. If one can do so, one is called a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who does not regress. Why? Subhuti, because all dharmas such as form in which a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva dwells are without self-nature. Therefore, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva does not dwell in all dharmas such as form, and can thus be non-retrogressing. Furthermore, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva does not praise non-Buddhist ascetics or Brahmins, does not observe worldly omens, does not cling to worldly signs, and does not believe in worldly gods. If one can do so, one is called a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who does not regress. Furthermore, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is not born in hell, nor in the eight states of disadvantage, and does not take a female body. If one can do so, one is called a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who does not regress.

This is the teaching on irreversibility. Furthermore, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who is irreversible, truly upholds and practices the path of the ten virtuous actions. From "even in dreams, they do not abide in the path of the ten non-virtuous actions" to "what need to mention when awake," it means that they themselves fully practice the ten virtues, encourage others to practice them, and proclaim the merits of practicing the ten virtues. Moreover, they possess the signs of completely abandoning the ten non-virtues. It should be understood that this is the teaching on irreversibility. Furthermore, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who is irreversible, from "when they abide in the perfection of generosity" to "when they abide in the perfection of wisdom, they cultivate that wisdom for the sake of all sentient beings," it means that when a Bodhisattva practices the six perfections, if they practice primarily for the benefit of sentient beings, then through those signs and marks, it should be understood that this is the teaching on irreversibility. Furthermore, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who is irreversible, "declares with sutras and songs, etc.," from "they make that Dharma-giving common with all sentient beings, and then dedicate it to unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment," it means that for the benefit of all sentient beings, they master the twelve divisions of scripture, and then proclaim them to sentient beings, dedicating the merit of giving the Dharma in common with themselves and all sentient beings to attaining unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. Through those signs and marks, it should be understood that this is an irreversible Bodhisattva. This is what is taught. Furthermore, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who is irreversible, has no hesitation, no doubt, no দ্বিধা (two minds) about the profound Dharma, from "even they do not truly see unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment" it means that by realizing that all phenomena, such as form, are without inherent existence in ultimate truth, therefore, if there is no hesitation, doubt, or দ্বিধা (two minds) about the profound Dharma, it should be known that this is irreversibility. This is what is taught. Furthermore, Subhuti,

Furthermore, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who is irreversible is one who possesses gentleness of bodily action, gentleness of speech, and gentleness of mind. That is to say, if one's bodily conduct is peaceful, one speaks gently, and one has no harmful thoughts in mind, know that this is a sign of irreversibility. Subhuti, furthermore, an irreversible Bodhisattva-Mahasattva possesses loving-kindness in bodily action, loving-kindness in speech, and loving-kindness in mind. The characteristic of loving-kindness is to establish all sentient beings in happiness. Whatever a Bodhisattva does with their body, whatever they say with their speech, and whatever they think in their mind, if all of it is solely for the purpose of establishing all sentient beings in happiness, know that this is a sign of irreversibility. Subhuti, furthermore, an irreversible Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is one who does not dwell together with these five obscurations, namely, attachment to desire, harmful intent, dullness, sleep, excitement, regret, and doubt. This means that if one is not associated with these five obscurations that become obstacles to the cultivation of the noble path, it is shown to be irreversible. Dullness and sleep are counted as one obscuration, and excitement and regret are also counted as one obscuration. Subhuti, furthermore, an irreversible Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is one who, at all times and in all places, has no latent predispositions whatsoever. This means that attachment to desire, attachment to existence, anger, pride, ignorance, views, and doubt, these latent predispositions are not present at any time or in any way. Among these, attachment to desire is attachment to the desire realm (Sanskrit: kāmadhātu). Attachment to existence is attachment to the form realm (Sanskrit: rūpadhātu) and the formless realm (Sanskrit: arūpadhātu). Anger is hatred in the desire realm. Pride has seven forms. Ignorance is unknowing in all three realms (Sanskrit: trailokya). Views have five forms. Doubt is having two minds when cultivating the noble path. If these latent predispositions are absent, then one is an irreversible Bodhisattva.
