Chapter Thirty-Five: The Chapter on Gathering Chapter Thirty-Five: The Chapter on Gathering Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, this Prajnaparamita is profound. Blessed One, this Prajnaparamita abides for the sake of great benefit," and so on. This profound Prajnaparamita, as mentioned in the previous sequence, performs great benefit and is inconceivable, immeasurable, incalculable, and possesses the meaning of inequality and equality. After repeatedly stating this, within this profound Prajnaparamita, all purified dharmas, such as the five perfections, are gathered. Just as ministers carry out all the intentions of a great king, it shows that all the needs of all the Buddha's teachings are accomplished solely by this profound Prajnaparamita, thus showing that it accomplishes great benefit. Among them, "Blessed One, this Prajnaparamita is profound. Blessed One, this Prajnaparamita abides for the sake of great benefit," and so on, up to "Prajnaparamita abides for the sake of inequality and equality," is Subhuti's statement that this Prajnaparamita accomplishes great benefit, and the Blessed One affirmed, "That is true." The meaning of great benefit and inconceivable meaning, etc., has been previously explained. Why is this so? Subhuti, in this profound Prajnaparamita, the five perfections are gathered, and so on, up to all-knowingness is gathered, which shows the reason why this Prajnaparamita accomplishes great benefit. Because all the needs of all purified dharmas, such as the six perfections, are accomplished solely by this Prajnaparamita, it is shown that this profound Prajnaparamita accomplishes great benefit. Subhuti, it is like this, for example, up to Prajnaparamita abides for the sake of accomplishing unequal and equal things.

In between, this is using a metaphor to illustrate that the Prajñāpāramitā can accomplish great things. For example, just as all the affairs of a great king are handled by ministers, similarly, all the needs of the Buddhas' activities, whether of the Great Vehicle, the Small Vehicle, or all three vehicles, are accomplished by this Prajñāpāramitā, therefore it is said to accomplish great things. Why is that? Subhūti, it is because, like this, the profound Prajñāpāramitā does not grasp form, nor is it attached, but abides in it, etc. This also demonstrates the reason why the profound Prajñāpāramitā accomplishes great things. If, through hearing, thinking, and meditating on the profound Prajñāpāramitā, one truly understands that all dharmas are empty, then one will not grasp forms and other dharmas due to craving and other afflictions, nor will one be attached to wrong views. Therefore, it is said that the profound Prajñāpāramitā accomplishes great things. Just as it is said about form, it should also be applied to the understanding of the aspects of the path, up to and including unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Question: World Honored One, how does the Prajñāpāramitā not grasp form, nor is it attached, but abides in it? And how does it not grasp unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, nor is it attached, but abides in it? In between, Subhūti asks in order to initiate a discussion, explaining that the things to be grasped and the things to be attached to, as well as the grasper and the attacher, and the mind that grasps and attaches, are all without inherent existence. The World Honored One replied: Subhūti, what do you think? Do you see any form that is to be grasped or to be attached to? etc., in order to explain in detail the meaning of Subhūti's question, "How is it that there is no grasping and no attachment?"

Explanation: In the ultimate sense, all dharmas are empty of inherent existence. Is there any object to be completely grasped, or an agent who grasps, or a mind that grasps, such a real entity? Thus, he asked Subhuti again, meaning that there is no such entity. Among them, by asking, "What form should be completely grasped or manifestly clung to, have you seen such a thing?" it shows that there is no object to be grasped. By asking, "What dharma is also completely grasped, and manifestly clung to?" it shows that there is no agent who grasps. By asking, "Should be completely grasped or manifestly clung to, have you also seen such a thing?" it shows that there is no grasping. Just as it was said about form, it should also be applied up to the knowledge of the aspects of the path, and the unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment. The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, well done, well done! Subhuti, I also have not truly seen form, because I have not truly seen it, therefore I do not completely grasp it, because I do not completely grasp it, therefore I do not closely take it," and so on, in order to clearly show the meaning of not having something to be completely grasped and manifestly clung to. The Blessed One said: Because all dharmas, such as form, are empty of inherent existence in the ultimate sense, therefore the Blessed One himself also does not truly see them, because he does not truly see them in that way, therefore he will not completely grasp them due to attachment, and because he does not completely grasp them in that way, he will also not closely take them due to views, and he will not manifestly cling to them, that is the meaning. Just as it was said about form, it should also be applied up to the omniscient wisdom, and the Thus gone One himself. Subhuti, therefore, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva should not manifestly cling to form, nor should he completely grasp it, from this to not manifestly cling to the Thus Gone One himself, nor should he completely grasp him, it is said that all dharmas are empty of inherent existence in that way, the Thus Gone One has not seen them, nor does he completely grasp them, because there is nothing to be closely taken, therefore
