Twenty-ninth, Chapter on Absence of Place. Twenty-ninth, Chapter on Absence of Place. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, the Perfection of Wisdom is 'there is no doing,' which is a profound and difficult to believe teaching, shown through the gate of the Perfection of Wisdom being non-conceptual and not doing anything. Ultimately, the Perfection of Wisdom itself is also empty of inherent existence. Because there is no entity, it is not the nature of a doer. All phenomena are also empty of inherent existence, so they are not objects of action. Thus, since both action and agent are not established as existing in reality, it does not do anything at all, that is the meaning." The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, it is because the doer is not observed." This means that the Perfection of Wisdom is ultimately empty of inherent existence, and because the entity of the doer is not observed, it does not do anything. Subhuti, similarly, from 'form is not observed' up to 'omniscience is not observed,' all phenomena from form up to omniscience are ultimately empty of inherent existence, and because they are not objects of action, the Perfection of Wisdom does not do anything. Asked: "Blessed One, how should a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practice the Perfection of Wisdom in this?" This means that, as mentioned above, the Perfection of Wisdom is neither an entity of the doer nor an entity of the object, so how should a Bodhisattva practice the Perfection of Wisdom? The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, if they do not practice in form, then they practice in the Perfection of Wisdom. Why is that? Whatever is permanent or impermanent, pleasure or pain, self or no-self, pure or impure, all such aspects

Up to the point of saying "there is no such thing," it teaches the method of how to practice the Prajñāpāramitā. In general, one does not grasp at characteristics and practice with regard to the nature of all dharmas, such as form, up to the point of all-knowingness. In particular, one does not practice with regard to "permanent" or "impermanent," nor does one practice with regard to "happiness" or "suffering," nor does one practice with regard to "self" or "no-self," nor does one practice with regard to "pure" or "impure." This is how to practice the Prajñāpāramitā, so it is taught. Furthermore, Subhūti, the bodhisattva mahāsattva, also teaches the method of practicing the Prajñāpāramitā by means of "when practicing the Prajñāpāramitā," and so on. If one does not practice with regard to "form is not complete," then one is practicing the Prajñāpāramitā. This is because the form that is imputed is not established as a real thing, so it is not completely established. If there is no such conceptualization, then one is practicing the Prajñāpāramitā, so it is taught. Why is that? If one does not practice with regard to "whatever form is incomplete, that is not form," then one is practicing the Prajñāpāramitā. This is because the form that is imputed in that way is not completely established, and it is not true. In ultimate reality, it is not the case that the entity of form exists. If one does not conceptualize in that way, then one understands the profound meaning of the Prajñāpāramitā and is able to practice the Prajñāpāramitā, so it is taught. Similarly, all dharmas, from feeling and so on up to all-knowingness, should be applied in the same way. Question: Blessed One, thus the Tathāgata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One, has well taught attachment and non-attachment to the sons or daughters of good family who belong to the Bodhisattva Vehicle. This is wonderful! This is praise for the fact that the Blessed One has spoken well of the Prajñāpāramitā, which is profound in meaning and abandons the two extremes of conceptualizing attachment and non-attachment. Blessed One.

The Blessed One said: 'Subhuti, it is just so. Subhuti, it is just so, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened One, has skillfully shown attachment and non-attachment to the sons and daughters of good family who are of the Bodhisattva vehicle.' This is the Blessed One's affirmation that all the questions asked by Subhuti have been answered, so that the assembly may believe it, and he says, 'This is true.' Furthermore, Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, if he does not apply attachment or non-attachment to form, then he is practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, and so on, up to if he does not apply attachment or non-attachment to all-knowingness, then he is practicing the Perfection of Wisdom. Because all dharmas, such as form, are empty in their own nature, one should not think, 'This is a place for attachment,' nor should one think, 'This is a nature without attachment.' If one does not think or discriminate in this way, then one is truly practicing the Perfection of Wisdom. Subhuti, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices in this way, he will not have any concept of attachment or non-attachment to form, and so on, up to he will not have any concept of attachment or non-attachment to unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. As said before, in this way, if one cultivates the profound meaning of the Perfection of Wisdom without any discrimination of attachment and non-attachment to all dharmas, the benefit is that one will not grasp any characteristics of attachment and non-attachment to all dharmas such as form, nor will any concepts arise. 'Blessed One, although this profound Dharma is taught in this way, it does not diminish in any way. Even if it is not taught, it does not diminish in any way. Even if it is taught, it does not increase in any way. Even if it is not taught, it does not increase in any way. It is truly wonderful!' This means that the profound meaning of the Perfection of Wisdom, its Suchness nature, is unchanging and completely established. Among them, 'teaching does not diminish it' means that the profound Perfection of Wisdom, its Suchness nature, is unchanging and completely established, and the Dharma teacher gives the Dharma to the listeners
