Chapter Twenty-eight: The Chapter on Purity. Chapter Twenty-eight: The Chapter on Purity. Then, the venerable Sharadvatiputra said to the Blessed One, and so on, as mentioned earlier, from the perspective of showing that all dharmas are indistinguishable in terms of purity, explaining the meaning of this profound and difficult-to-believe Prajnaparamita. Shariputra, having understood, initiated the discussion to clearly and thoroughly explain that pure and profound meaning to the retinue. The Blessed One showed that all dharmas are profound because they are extremely pure. "Blessed One, this purity is profound," is like saying that the purity mentioned earlier is difficult for those with fixations to understand, hence it is said to be profound. The Blessed One said, "Because it is extremely pure." This means that all obscurations of knowable objects and afflictions, even habitual tendencies, are completely abandoned and not tainted in any way. Because this extreme purity is not the domain of those with conceptualizations, it is shown to be profound. Sharadvatiputra asked, "For the sake of what purity?" It was asked in order to initiate the discussion of explaining the purity of all dharmas, such as form. The Blessed One said, "Sharadvatiputra, form is profound in its purity," up to "all-knowingness is profound in its purity because of its purity." This means that all those dharmas from form, etc., up to all-knowingness, are ultimately empty of inherent existence and pure. Because it is not tainted in any way, it is difficult for those who cling to characteristics and have conceptualizations to understand and believe, therefore it is shown to be profound. Asked, "Blessed One, purity is appearance," up to "all-knowingness is appearance in its purity because of its purity." This means that all the dharmas from the six perfections, etc., up to all-knowingness, are completely pure and without any obscuration. Because it is naturally luminous, it is said that purity is appearance. Asked, "Blessed One, purity is without the union of subject and object," up to all-knowingness.

Up to "There is no transmigration and no connection, which is purity," it shows that all dharmas from form, etc., up to omniscience, are empty of nature and pure, so this aggregate is abandoned, and there is no transmigration to another world, and there is no connection to take the next aggregate. Question: "Bhagavan, purity is the absence of all afflictions," up to "Omniscience is naturally luminous, so purity is the absence of all afflictions," it shows that all dharmas from form, etc., up to omniscience, are completely pure in the ultimate sense and naturally luminous, because they are not stained by afflictions such as desire, so purity is the absence of all afflictions. Question: "Bhagavan, purity is the absence of attainment and realization," up to "Omniscience is the absence of attainment and realization, which is purity," it shows that all dharmas from form, etc., up to omniscience, are naturally empty and pure in the ultimate sense, so there is no result to be attained or realized from them, which is purity. Question: "Bhagavan, purity is the absence of manifestation," up to "Omniscience is the absence of manifestation, which is purity," it shows that all dharmas from form, etc., up to omniscience, are naturally empty and without substance in the ultimate sense, so both the manifestable and the manifester are not established as existing, which is purity. Question: "Bhagavan, purity is not born in the desire realm," up to "Shariputra, the formless realm is naturally imperceptible, so purity is unborn," it shows that all dharmas are empty of essence and the nature of purity, suchness, is not in any of the three realms.

This is to show that there is no arising. The so-called desire realm, form realm, and formless realm are merely conceptual constructs. From the ultimate point of view, the three realms themselves are empty of inherent existence. Since there is no object to grasp, how can there be arising? Therefore, neither the place of arising nor the things that will arise are obtainable. This is true purity, which is what is to be explained. The questioner said: "World Honored One, purity is not to be sought." The World Honored One replied: "Son of Sharadvati, because purity is empty of its own nature, purity cannot know omniscience." This is because so-called purity, its nature is emptiness, without substance, therefore it is not the nature of being knowable, so it cannot know the dharmas from form, etc., up to omniscience. This is to explain that because dharma has no mind, purity has no knowing. The so-called purity has no knowing means that because the nature of purity has no discrimination, there is no knowing that grasps at the characteristics of dharmas. The questioner said: "World Honored One, the Prajnaparamita neither helps nor harms omniscience." This is to explain that, from the ultimate point of view, the non-discriminating Prajnaparamita and omniscience are of one taste in Suchness, and because they are extremely pure, they are not the cause of each other. The World Honored One replied: "Son of Sharadvati, because it is extremely pure." This is to say that both Prajnaparamita and omniscience are of one taste in the nature of the purity of the Dharmadhatu, and because they are extremely pure, they are not the cause of each other. This is to emphasize and explain the meaning stated earlier. The questioner said: "World Honored One, how does the Prajnaparamita neither help nor harm omniscience?" This is because the World Honored One repeated what Shariputra had said earlier in order to make the audience more firmly believe.
