Chapter Twenty-Four: The Chapter on the Categories of Merit Chapter Twenty-Four: The Chapter on the Categories of Merit Then, the Blessed One said to Indra, the Lord of the Gods: Kausika, any son or daughter of good family who, if they were to establish the beings of Jambudvipa in the path of the ten virtuous actions, and teach them, and those sons or daughters of good family would also awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, would awaken to perfect and complete enlightenment, even to the point of establishing the beings of Jambudvipa in the path of the ten virtuous actions, the merit of reading, copying, or reciting this Perfection of Wisdom and giving it to others for the sake of recitation is even greater. The reason why the benefit is so great is that through this Perfection of Wisdom, the Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Bodhisattvas of the three times can train in the uncontaminated Dharma, such as the Four Mindfulnesses, up to the Eighteen Unshared Dharmas of the Buddha, and thus attain their respective fruits, which is why it needs to be widely proclaimed. Among them, "entered correctly without fault" refers to entering the path to attain the fruit of a Shravaka Stream-Enterer. "A Bodhisattva entered correctly without fault" refers to entering the path to attain the first Bodhisattva ground. Kausika, if one were to establish a single being in the fruit of Stream-Entry, the merit of that son or daughter of good family would increase greatly, rather than merely establishing the beings of Jambudvipa in the path of the ten virtuous actions. Kausika, therefore, Bodhisattvas should be worshiped and revered in this way. Know that the world, including gods, demons, Brahmas, and all beings including ascetics and Brahmins, should offer flowers, garlands, incense, unguents, powders, clothes, umbrellas, banners, flags, and various musical instruments, and should honor, respect, and venerate them.

In the meantime, placing the sentient beings of Jambudvipa on the path of the ten virtuous actions is less meritorious than placing one sentient being in the fruit of stream-entry, as well as the fruit of once-returner, the fruit of non-returner, and the merit of placing them in the state of Arhat. Even placing all the sentient beings of Jambudvipa in the four fruits such as stream-entry, it is more meritorious to place one sentient being in self-enlightenment. Even placing all the sentient beings of Jambudvipa in self-enlightenment, it is more meritorious to place one sentient being in unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment, which is shown with reason. The reason for this is that placing one sentient being in unsurpassed enlightenment will ensure that the principles of the Buddha's teachings will not be interrupted. This will not happen when the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas are placed in their respective fruits. Moreover, the Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Tathagatas also arise from Bodhisattvas, so it is said. Kausika, son or daughter of lineage, if all the sentient beings of Jambudvipa are placed on the path of the ten virtuous actions, Kausika, what do you think? From "the Tathagata, Arhat, perfect and complete Buddhas exist" in between, placing all the sentient beings of Jambudvipa on the path of the ten virtuous actions, as well as the sentient beings of the four continents, the sentient beings of a thousand worlds, the sentient beings of two thousand worlds, the sentient beings of the three thousand great thousand worlds, and in each of the ten directions, in worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, however many sentient beings there are, the merit of placing all of them on the path of the ten virtuous actions is less than giving this Prajnaparamita to others for the purpose of reading, writing, or reciting it, the merit is greater, which is shown with reason. The reason for this is that from this Prajnaparamita, all the undefiled dharmas are extensively explained, and because these undefiled dharmas exist,

Those noble and high-ranking beings of the desire realm, and the gods of the Four Great Kings and so on, down to the gods of the formless realm, all the gods of the three realms will exist in the world, and the perfection of generosity and so on, up to the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened Buddha, all pure dharmas will exist in the world, that is what is to be explained. Kausika, furthermore, if as many people as there are in Jambudvipa, some of those sons or daughters of good family place (others) in the four dhyanas, and the four immeasurables, and the four formless absorptions, and the five superknowledges, Kausika, what do you think of this? Would the merit of that son or daughter of good family increase greatly because of this? From here on, up to "the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened Buddha exists," all the people of Jambudvipa, and the beings of the four continents, and the beings of a thousandfold world, and the beings of a two-thousandfold world, and the beings of a three-thousand great thousandfold world, and the beings of the ten directions as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River, all those beings, even if they were all placed in the four dhyanas, and the four immeasurables, and the four formless absorptions, and the merit of the five superknowledges, would not equal the great merit of giving to others for the sake of reading, writing, and reciting this Prajnaparamita, this is explained together with the reasons stated earlier. Kausika, furthermore, any son or daughter of good family who holds, recites, reads, fully understands, and properly attends to this Prajnaparamita, then his merit will increase greatly, from here on, up to even if all the beings of the three-thousand great thousandfold world were placed in the path of the ten virtuous actions, and the four dhyanas, and the four immeasurables, and the four formless absorptions, and the five superknowledges, it would not equal holding the Prajnaparamita.
