Chapter Sixteen: The Chapter on What Is Difficult to Comprehend Chapter Sixteen: The Chapter on What Is Difficult to Comprehend Then, those sons of the gods had this thought: How should we seek those who listen to the Dharma from the Venerable Subhuti? This is because from the arising of the first thought, there is no speaking or hearing, so one should abide in the Perfection of Wisdom. The sons of the gods heard what Subhuti had said earlier, that all dharmas are unspeakable. Since there is no teaching and no listening, then there can be no teaching of the Dharma. What kind of Dharma teaching would the Venerable Subhuti have? They had such doubts. Then, the mind of the venerable Subhuti, fully knowing the thoughts of those sons of the gods, said to those sons of the gods: Sons of the gods, my teaching of the Dharma is like an illusion. Sons of the gods, listening to my Dharma should also be sought as if it were an illusion. This is to say that the teacher, the listener, and the Dharma to be taught are merely expressions in conventional truth. In ultimate truth, none of these have substance. From the absence of substance, it appears as if it exists, and one should understand that this is like an illusion. Sons of the gods, my teaching of the Dharma is like a magical creation. Listening to my Dharma should also be sought as if it were a magical creation. Those are neither hearing anything nor realizing anything. This is taking the example from magical creation to illustrate that the teacher, the listener, and the Dharma to be taught are not truly existent in ultimate truth. Those are not hearing anything, which means that through the wisdom of hearing, nothing is heard. There is no realization, which means that through the wisdom of meditation, no fruit is manifested. Then, those sons of the gods said to the venerable Subhuti: Venerable Subhuti, are these sentient beings like illusions, and are those who listen to the Dharma also like illusions? Are these sentient beings like magical creations, and are those who listen to the Dharma also like magical creations? This is to introduce the occasion for explaining that all dharmas are like illusions, like magical creations, and like dreams.

Those beings who listen to the Dharma, and the Dharma to be explained, are they also like illusions and apparitions? The sons of the gods asked Subhuti. Subhuti said: Sons of the gods, yes, it is so. It is so. Those beings are like illusions, and those who listen to the Dharma are like illusions. Those beings are like apparitions, and those who listen to the Dharma are like apparitions. This is the meaning of what the sons of the gods asked earlier, and Subhuti answered in this way. Sons of the gods, those beings are like dreams. Sons of the gods, those beings are like illusions. Sons of the gods, form is also like a dream, like an illusion, and so on. Sons of the gods, perfect and complete enlightenment is also like a dream, like an illusion. In between, not only are the Dharma teachers, listeners, and the Dharma to be explained like dreams and illusions, but also from the five aggregates and so on up to perfect and complete enlightenment, all phenomena of the world and beyond are like dreams and illusions. This is what is to be explained. Then, those sons of the gods said to the venerable Subhuti: Venerable Subhuti, if enlightenment is also said to be like a dream, like an illusion, then is Nirvana also said to be like a dream, like an illusion? This question was asked to clarify that some Hinayana practitioners and others hold Nirvana to be real. Subhuti said: Sons of the gods, I say that Nirvana is also like a dream, like an illusion. Therefore, if there is another Dharma that is superior to Nirvana, I would also say that it is like a dream, like an illusion. This means that the explanation and expression of the word Nirvana is merely a conventionally imputed name, but in ultimate truth, Nirvana is not real, but is said to be existent from non-existence, which appears like a dream and an illusion.

The so-called "like chaff speech" is a word of abandonment. Although there is no other Dharma more excellent than surpassing Nirvana, if there is one like that in a hundred, it is merely nominally existent in conventional truth. Ultimately, it is not established as a real thing. Therefore, if it is like a dream or an illusion, what need is there to mention Nirvana? That is the meaning. Why is that? Because, like a dream, like an illusion, and Nirvana are non-dual and cannot be made into two. Just as dreams and illusions are not truly existent, so too, Nirvana is merely spoken of in conventional truth, but ultimately it is non-existent. Therefore, dreams, illusions, and Nirvana are all of one taste in being non-existent, and there is no difference between them. That is what is being shown. Then, the venerable son of Sharadvati, the venerable great son of Maudgalyayana, the venerable great Kaushtila, the venerable son of Katyayana, the venerable son of Maitreya, the venerable great Kashyapa, and many thousands of Bodhisattvas said this to the venerable Subhuti: Venerable Subhuti, who will believe in this Prajnaparamita which is so profound, so difficult to see, so difficult to realize, so peaceful, so clear, so subtle, so excellent? That is to say, who will believe in such a profound and vast Prajnaparamita that shows all dharmas to be like dreams and illusions in conventional truth? Ultimately, no one will believe. In order to explain this meaning in detail, the noble great Shravaka Arhats and many Bodhisattvas asked Subhuti: This Prajnaparamita is so profound, because it is difficult for those of the Lesser Vehicle, those of weak intellect, and the coarse discriminations of the heretics who cling to self, to fathom its depth with their intellect, therefore it is profound. So difficult to see, because it is not the object of the five consciousnesses such as the eye, therefore it is difficult to see. So
