Chapter Four: The Chapter on Faultlessness Chapter Four: The Chapter on Faultlessness Now, let us explain the benefits of diligence. That is, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, the Bhagavan who wishes to fully realize form, says, "I shall train in the Prajnaparamita." From this point until, "Why is that? Because from this Prajnaparamita, the three vehicles that Bodhisattvas-Mahasattvas, Shravakas, and Pratyekabuddhas should constantly and continuously train in are extensively taught," it is explained. The benefits are fourfold: fully realizing the dharmas to be fully realized, abandoning what is to be abandoned, perfecting what is to be perfected, and making manifest what is to be made manifest by obtaining it. Among these, from "The Bhagavan who wishes to fully realize form" until "The Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, the Bhagavan who wishes to fully realize disturbance, should train in the Prajnaparamita," it refers to knowing the aggregates, elements, sense bases, and the twelve links of dependent origination as they truly are, in their conventional and ultimate nature. This is taught as the benefit of diligence in the Prajnaparamita. From "The Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, the Bhagavan who wishes to abandon desire, should train in the Prajnaparamita" until "The Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who wishes to abandon the ten paths of unwholesome actions should train in the Prajnaparamita," it refers to abandoning the dharmas to be abandoned that belong to the side of afflictions. This is taught as the benefit of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva's diligence in the Prajnaparamita. Among these, desire, hatred, and ignorance are the root of all afflictions and all unwholesomeness, therefore they should be abandoned. "The view of the perishable aggregate" refers to grasping the five aggregates, which are by nature perishable, as self and belonging to self in an object that is without self.

Doubt means having hesitation and uncertainty about actions, results, truth, the Three Jewels, and so on. Pride in discipline and asceticism means that the characteristic of abandoning the three physical actions such as killing, and the four verbal actions such as lying, is discipline. Asceticism refers to the ascetic practices of non-Buddhists, such as imitating the behavior of mountain goats and cattle, lying in ashes, and wearing long hair. They believe that discipline and asceticism can lead to liberation, do not practice other virtuous deeds, think that these are the most supreme, and are proud of them. Desire and malice refer to the desire and anger of the desire realm. Desire for the form realm refers to the desire for the form realm, clinging to the taste of meditation and samadhi. Desire for the formless realm refers to clinging to the bliss of the four absorptions of the formless realm. All fetters refer to the nine all fetters, namely desire, anger, pride, ignorance, views, discipline, pride in asceticism, stinginess, doubt, and jealousy. Because these bind and fetter beings in samsara, they are called all fetters. Latent tendencies refer to the seven latent tendencies, namely desire for the desire realm, anger, desire for the form and formless realms, pride, ignorance, views, and doubt. When these are not manifest and are extremely subtle, they arise and increase from the non-manifest latent tendencies, and follow the three actions of body, speech, and mind, so they are called latent tendencies. Pervasive arising refers to the ten pervasive arisings, namely torpor, sleep, excitement, regret, jealousy, stinginess, shamelessness, lack of embarrassment, anger, and dissipation. These disturb the mind, and from the gaps, afflictions such as desire arise, so they are called pervasive arisings. The four foods refer to the food of morsels, the food of contact, the food of intention, and the food of consciousness. Among them, the food of morsels

There are four kinds of food: lump food, like humans and gods in the desire realm eating food with their mouths; tactile food, like birds and turtles born from eggs, living on the warmth of their mother's body; ideational food, like when a famine occurs, parents hang a bag of ashes on a pillar and say to their two young children, 'We will return and make tsampa from this flour to give you. In the meantime, don't cry.' The parents leave the two children at home and go to other places to find food. The two children think in their minds that they have flour food, thinking and hoping, and even if they don't eat the flour, they can live for a long time; consciousness food, which is the consciousness of the gods in the form and formless realms, who experience the taste of happiness by practicing meditation and samadhi, and can live without other food. The four bonds are: desire bond, existence bond, view bond, and ignorance bond. Among them, the desire bond refers to the afflictions such as desire in the desire realm, except for the two views and ignorance. The existence bond refers to the afflictions such as desire in the form and formless realms, except for the two views and ignorance. The view bond refers to the five types of views: the view of the aggregates of existence, the view of holding to extremes, wrong views, the view of holding views as supreme, and the view of holding precepts and vows as supreme. The ignorance bond refers to the ignorance of the three realms. These afflictions cause sentient beings to be born in the three realms, six realms, and four forms of birth, hence they are called bonds. The four rivers refer to: these four bonds can carry sentient beings to the three lower realms, therefore they are like rivers and are called rivers. The four knots refer to: attachment, malice, holding precepts and vows as supreme, and holding views as supreme. These afflictions prevent sentient beings from being liberated, therefore they are called knots.
