Chapter Six: Explanation of Gradual Abhisamaya. Chapter Six: Explanation of Gradual Abhisamaya. Now, the gradual Abhisamaya is to be explained. In this regard, the treatise states: "Giving, wisdom, intermediate purity, Buddha, etc., mindfulness and Dharma, non-substantial nature, are considered as gradual activities." This is said. Gradual activity, gradual learning, and gradual accomplishment have been previously taught. Now, it is to be explained. 'Considered' means 'desired'. What is it? Giving, etc., are mentioned. Giving is the Perfection of Giving. 'Wisdom, intermediate purity' means the intermediate purity of the Perfection of Wisdom. By mentioning 'intermediate', it also includes the Perfection of Morality, the Perfection of Patience, the Perfection of Diligence, and the Perfection of Meditation. 'Buddha, etc., mindfulness' means mindfulness of objects such as the Buddha. 'And' is connected sequentially. 'Dharma, non-substantial nature' shows that substance is the main thing, meaning that all dharmas are also of non-substantial nature. 'Intermediate' means desiring it in that way. Therefore, in the sutra, it says: 'Furthermore, abundance, etc.' 'Like this' refers to the three words that will be explained. The Perfection of Wisdom is a gradual activity. 'Should be known accordingly' means 'should be realized'. How? 'Because all dharmas are without attachment, one should know accordingly that it is the Perfection of Wisdom.' 'Because all dharmas are without distinction, one should know accordingly that it is the Perfection of Wisdom.' 'Because all dharmas are without arising, one should know accordingly that it is the Perfection of Wisdom.' This is said. Among them, the first 'all dharmas' are the six perfections, because they are the path to enlightenment. The word 'dharma' here is also the word 'path'. 'All dharmas without attachment' means without attachment, which is without obstacles. In order to gradually liberate all sentient beings, that Bodhisattva

That place should be subsequently understood. How is it that from the initial generation of the mind of enlightenment, one takes hold and engages in the perfection of generosity? One personally gives generosity and also establishes others in the perfection of generosity, and also speaks praises of generosity. For any others who engage in the perfection of generosity, one speaks praises and rejoices accordingly, and through that generosity, one obtains a great accumulation of enjoyments. With a mind free from stinginess, one gives food, drink, clothing, perfume, bedding, dwelling, and other implements of happiness to those who desire them. That generosity causes beings to be established in ethics, concentration, wisdom, liberation, and the vision of the knowledge of liberation. That one who possesses the accumulation of ethics and so forth, by that very means, transcends the levels of the Hearers and so forth. One enters the faultless path of the Bodhisattvas. One purifies the Buddha-fields. One ripens beings. One obtains all-knowingness. One turns the wheel of Dharma excellently. One establishes beings in the three vehicles and completely liberates them from cyclic existence, and thus generosity gradually accomplishes activities, yet one does not fixate on that and on beings. Thus, this has no intrinsic nature, and whatever has no intrinsic nature is without entity. This is the gradual activity of the perfection of generosity. Similarly, the six, such as ethics, are also the gradual activity of the six perfections. Since all phenomena are indivisible, one should subsequently understand it as the Perfection of Wisdom, saying that all phenomena are the six recollections. How are those phenomena? Because they hold the mind. Furthermore, merit is also spoken of as Dharma in the world, and that is also the merit that arises from cultivation. The indivisibility of all phenomena is the equality of non-difference, because it is the nature of non-entity. What should be subsequently understood by that is as before. Thus, the Bodhisattva, from the beginning, relies on the generation of the mind of enlightenment, all

With the mindfulness that possesses all omniscience, one cultivates faith in the dharmas of non-substantiality and meditates on the six recollections. One cultivates them oneself and also places others in them. One also praises and agrees with any others who practice them. When one cultivates those in this way, with the nature of non-substantiality, one perfects the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, up to all omniscience. Having manifestly and completely awakened to all dharmas with the nature of non-substantiality, one accomplishes everything from turning the wheel of dharma to fully ripening sentient beings. Therefore, one should contemplate that the Buddha, the Bhagavan, is not the aggregates such as form, not the marks and signs, not the aggregates such as discipline, not the ten powers, the fearlessnesses, the analytical knowledges, great compassion, great love, the eighteen unshared dharmas, nor dependent origination, and so forth. Why is that? Because those are of the nature of non-substantiality. This absence of memory and absence of mindfulness is the recollection of the Buddha. When one practices the Perfection of Wisdom, one does not contemplate good dharmas, nor conditioned and unconditioned dharmas, because those are of the nature of non-substantiality. This absence of contemplation is the recollection of the Dharma. The community of the Bhagavan's shravakas, the four types of individuals and the eight great individuals, are without inherent existence. Whatever dharma is without inherent existence is non-existent. This absence of contemplation is the recollection of the Sangha. When one proceeds in the Perfection of Wisdom, abiding in discipline that is unbroken, undestroyed, unmixed, not supreme, not grasping, endowed with power, praised by the wise, having attained samadhi and samapatti, one contemplates discipline as non-substantial. This contemplation is the recollection of discipline. When one practices the Perfection of Wisdom,
