It is called the great meaning because it enables one to attain enlightenment in a way that does not focus on appearances. The manifestation of accomplishment has been shown. The root of the path of meditation and the path of seeing, which transcend the world, is faith. What is its cause? Serving the Buddhas and giving, etc., and whatever is skillful in means, these are the causes of faith. "This" refers to the Perfection of Wisdom. "Serving the Buddhas" means that one has come here after honoring the perfectly complete Buddhas of the ten directions. From "Where, son of Śāradvatī, endued with long life," up to "born here," it is said that one has served the Buddhas. "Giving, etc." means that from "son of Śāradvatī," up to before "Then the venerable Subhūti said to the Blessed One," one has perfectly cultivated giving, etc. From "Then the venerable Subhūti said to the Blessed One, 'Thus I ask,'" up to "strives," is skillful in means. Again, Subhūti, from the bodhisattva's vehicle, up to "will fall into the hands of evil friends," is the action of being deprived of the Dharma. The causes of being deprived of the Dharma are: being oppressed by the hordes of demons, not having faith in the profound Dharma, being attached to the aggregates, etc., and being seized by evil friends. There are four causes of being deprived of the Dharma: being blessed by demons, not having faith in the profound Dharma, being manifestly attached to the aggregates, etc., and being completely seized by evil friends. Again, Subhūti, from the bodhisattva, up to "immeasurable ones will be taken," is being deprived of the Dharma. From Subhūti's question, up to "lacking mindfulness and not possessing awareness," are the causes of being deprived of the Dharma. Purity is to be explained. Its characteristic is: the fruit is pure, form, etc., is pure. Why? These two are not different, one.

Because there is none, it is called purity. Thus it is said, Subhuti, whatever is pure from form to enlightenment, that itself is the purity of the fruit. Because those two are without difference and cannot be separated. Non-duality is another name for that which cannot be made into two. Thus, it is called purity by this characteristic. What is the purity of? It is the Prajnaparamita, which means the path of meditation. Thus it is said, this is to say, form purity and fruit purity and Prajnaparamita purity are non-dual, that is, those cannot be made into two. Prajnaparamita purity itself is its object and its fruit purity. Starting from what Subhuti calls form purity, up to what Subhuti calls again, non-duality, that is, cannot be made into two, is the teaching. Each is not different, there is no difference, this is the explanation. This is the characteristic of purity. Its divisions are also four: Afflictions, knowable objects, and the three paths, are diminished, hence the purity of disciples, Pratyekabuddhas, and Bodhisattvas, the Buddhas are all extremely pure. Thus it is said. Disciples are Sravakas. Pratyekabuddhas are solitary realizers. The sons of the Buddhas are Bodhisattvas, their purity, in order, is afflictions and, the conceptualizations of what is grasped and, not understanding existence in the three paths, this is the path, because it is abandoned by the three paths. Buddhas are the Bhagavan, this is the extremely pure. The edge is the boundary and the occasion, being extremely beyond that is the extremely pure, because all obscurations including habitual tendencies are abandoned. All kinds, that is, in all ways.

That which was spoken is: Among the nine grounds, there is the great; through the door of antidotes, there is the small; the small and so forth are the path. Thus it was said. The nine grounds are the desire realm, meditative concentration, and the formless realm. The purification of these is what is to be cultivated. For that purpose, there are nine aspects to each ground. The path of cultivation is the antidote from the greatest of the great to the smallest of the small in order, from the greatest of the great faults of defilement to the smallest of the small. Among these, the purification of a Bodhisattva, immediately following the words, "Furthermore, Subhuti," is the path of the smallest of the small. From then on, the words, "Furthermore, Subhuti," are the middle of the small. From then on, the two are the great of the small. Starting from "From then on," up to the all-knowingness, the purification that is called profound is the small of the middle. Starting from the question of Sharadvatiputra, up to the all-knowingness, the appearance of purification for the sake of purification is the middle of the middle. Starting from Sharadvatiputra, up to the all-knowingness, the absence of change and the absence of connection of self-nature, which is called purification, is the great of the middle. Starting from Sharadvatiputra, up to the all-knowingness, the purification because there is no inherent affliction is the small of the great. Starting from Sharadvatiputra, up to the all-knowingness, the purification because there is no obstruction and no manifest realization is the middle of the great. Starting from Sharadvatiputra, up to the all-knowingness, the purification because there is no manifest accomplishment is the great of the great. The antidote to the three realms, the equality of the measurer and the measured, and so forth, starting from "Those and so forth," up to the purification because the formless realm is inherently without an object, which is unborn, is the antidote to the path of the three realms. Starting from the question, up to all phenomena being without an object
