Explanation of the Third Chapter Explanation of the Third Chapter Now, whatever is said in the collections of those who know everything, such as the Hearers, about the four truths, possessing sixteen aspects, etc., should be realized here on the path of the Bodhisattva, just as it is. Therefore, it is said for the sake of realization: Not on this shore, not on the far shore, not in between them, for the sake of knowing the equality of all times, it is called Prajnaparamita. Here, Prajnaparamita is all-knowing. Because the Hearers do not fully know the equality of all times, they do not accept Samsara, Nirvana, or the Middle Way. It should be understood that Bodhisattvas should not accept it in this way, that is Prajnaparamita. "Not on this shore" refers to Samsara. "Not on the far shore" refers to Nirvana. "Not in between them" refers to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. "Desire" means truly desiring. Regarding "what," it is said: For the sake of knowing the equality of all times. That is to say, all things of the three times, whose nature is self-luminous, emptiness, free from grasping and being grasped, that very equality, through actual realization, is said to be not abiding in Samsara and not abiding in Nirvana. If emptiness is universally present, then the Prajnaparamita of realization is also universally present, why do the Hearers not realize it, and only the Bodhisattvas realize it? To this, it is said: Because of focusing on characteristics, it is distant due to lack of skillful means, because of skillful means, it is said to be truly near. That is to say, "because of focusing on characteristics" means completely grasping the aggregates, etc., as grasping and being grasped, and that is because of grasping at characteristics. Because of focusing on grasping and being grasped, it is not skillful means. Because it is not skillful means, the Prajnaparamita of the Hearers is distant, although it appears like impermanence, etc., certainty is not born. The Buddhas, etc., because of skillful means, prevent grasping and being grasped. The wisdom of realizing the emptiness of nature
