Commentary on the Fifth Chapter Commentary on the Fifth Chapter Where there is no need for effort, if there is no mindfulness, then one should contemplate with effort, but not elsewhere, because it abides in spontaneous accomplishment. In the manner of the perfection, in the sequence of cultivating the arising of bodhicitta, etc., from one to another, where there is no effort, effort should be abandoned; where it is absent, effort should be made. Thus, by contemplating the meaning of the four stages, it is said that one possesses the knowledge of the unborn nature of all phenomena, paths, and grounds. In order to show that one should realize the path that is most excellent from that, for the purpose of cultivating, it is stated, "From the complete realization in all aspects." If one possesses the knowledge of the unborn nature of all phenomena, paths, and grounds, what will happen? The answer is that the realization of the most excellent will arise. Here, there is the realization of the most excellent, that is, by cultivating the peak realization of effort and non-effort, the spontaneously accomplished wisdom will arise. This is the remaining meaning. From the peak realization, in order to easily understand the cause of explaining the signs, etc., at the beginning, the words "because" etc. are stated. As it is said, "Even in dreams," etc., because one is extremely accustomed to the explanation of signs made in the form of verses. As it is said, "With reverence, etc.," when cultivating the path of selflessness with reverence, etc., with a slight power of excellence, in the state of not being asleep, merely by seeing, not only in dreams and illusions, etc., one sees forms and other phenomena, but also in other states of drowsiness, one can see them. After that, "Listeners," etc., means that one has the most excellent wisdom, so one sees that other paths have no real meaning. "Thus gone one," etc., means that one sees that one's own mind is no different from buddhas and bodhisattvas. "Of the Buddha," etc., means that because the body etc. are light, one sees walking in the sky etc. in accordance with one's own and others' practices. "The Dharma teacher," etc.

Therefore, decline is due to the same inferiority, because there is no abandonment. The so-called hell beings, etc., are because their own minds are pure, so their own Buddha-fields are pure. Remembering this, hells, etc., are pure, because they are not different from their own minds. The so-called cities, etc., are because they have learned inconceivable skillful means, so they have perfected inconceivable abilities. The so-called yakshas, etc., are because they have completely abandoned grasping, etc. The so-called "own," etc., is because they excel in the wisdom of clairvoyance, and diligence itself is not a place where demons can tread, so they rely on true spiritual friends. The so-called "all kinds," etc., is because permanence and self, etc., have no meaning, so by subduing internal and external heretics, they learn the excellent meaning and the superior points of the scriptures, such as the meaning of the sutras of one hundred thousand verses, etc. The so-called "all," etc., is because there is no thought of grasping, etc. The so-called "Buddha," etc., is because the thought is immaculate. The distinction of the moment of attaining the peak realization is the wisdom of the spontaneously accomplished peak realization. The so-called sign is the sign, etc., of the yogi of the peak realization. Here, the timid mind should be held, and agitation should also be calmed. As it is said, for all meditations, the timid mind is through the appearance of attention. For agitation caused by desire and conceptualization, one should know that one should gradually prevent it with the contemplation of impurity and the meditation of mindfulness of breathing. The meaning of the verses called Jambudvipa, etc., is that the beings born in Jambudvipa, etc., are the beings of Jambudvipa, and however many they are, there are that many Buddhas, and offering to them is delightful.

That which causes to arise. Virtue and so on are the best of merit. For example, making offerings, that is, with many things such as flowers and incense, again and again, with the former as an example, and the latter mutually as examples, in a manner of increasing in sequence from above, becoming the nature of increasing merit, there are sixteen kinds in total. The four continents and the sun and moon, Mount Sumeru and the desire gods, a thousand Brahma worlds, a thousand are considered the general root. Those thousand times a thousand, are the intermediate world realm. Those thousand times a thousand, are three thousand, simultaneously holding and arising. As it is said, the meaning is like this: In the verses, mentioning Jambudvipa is merely a nearby reference, therefore, with Jambudvipa etc. representing Jambudvipa, Purvavideha, Aparagodaniya, Uttarakuru, and including the moon etc., the three thousand great thousand world realms, in which whatever sentient beings, the Tathagatas equal to their number, making offerings to them, is the first increase. Especially, the words 'etc.', are saying that there are seven kinds of increase. The Prajnaparamita has three kinds. To attend to this, is relying on meditation and so on. Non-arising refers to the non-arising of all dharmas, endurance of this is desire, that is, obtaining it. Not fixating on enlightenment and the dharmas that cause enlightenment, is not fixating on knowable things and so on. Special refers to the Shravakas etc. and the uncommon ten virtues etc., and the ten samapattis of the formless realm, that is, obtaining them. Approaching and going to all the realms of the gods, is for the benefit of others, going by comprehensively understanding the gods etc. All the maras refer to the faculties etc. Conquering them, is through supernormal powers making them lose their ability. Birth similar to the teacher refers to the Bodhisattvas. Abiding in the same way, is practicing the same conduct. Also, merit has eight kinds, connect with the following text. That is in all ways.
