Commentary on the First Chapter Commentary on the First Chapter Having thus shown the meaning of the summary, since a Bodhisattva wishes to attain enlightenment and it is the fruit, it is necessary to attain omniscience. Therefore, at first, it is intended to explain the verses that summarize omniscience by way of detailed explanation. The nature of generating the mind, along with its object. The generation of the mind is for the sake of others. I desire perfect and complete enlightenment. It is said that after becoming a Buddha, one should strive for the benefit of others as much as possible. Thus, the generation of the mind, with the characteristic of desiring perfect and complete enlightenment for the benefit of others, is the nature of both aspiration and action. The desire for perfect and complete enlightenment is to strive for that purpose, and the desire for virtue arises from the mind. But isn't the generation of the mind the object of the mind, which is the appearance of a superior object? If so, how does it become the generation of the mind? Although it is true, here, if there is the characteristic of desiring virtue and striving for its meaning, then the cause and effect are shown by the mind of enlightenment. Thus, all the virtues of a Bodhisattva who strives for meaning will increase. To know this, it is based on approximation, so there is no fault. Another explanation is that aspiration is striving for meaning, which is the desire for perfect and complete enlightenment. The generation of the mind that acts simultaneously with it is shown as its expression. Thus, Bodhisattvas generate the mind endowed with aspiration, and it should be known that this is to make known this meaning. Also, what is the nature of what is desired, and for whose sake is the mind generated? What is perfect and complete enlightenment, and what is the benefit of others? That and that are spoken of as in the sutras, through the gates of brevity and expansiveness. It is said that from the mother of the Buddhas of the three times, one should also know that the Prajnaparamita and all the giving, etc., should be given to the object of giving, and that the giver, receiver, etc., should be cultivated without attachment. It has the meaning of making known this meaning, and all sentient beings as they should be.

Transcending stinginess and so on, because they want to please them with generosity and so on, they should cultivate this Prajnaparamita. In this way, with words that strive to show, without contradicting the meaning of the sutras, in a concise and extensive way, it shows the complete and perfect enlightenment and the benefit of others. Thus, it should be known that generating the mind is the nature of wanting complete and perfect enlightenment for the sake of benefiting others. Although all the treatises strive to show the meaning of each chapter, because of the fear of many words, the source is not written. Having thus described the object and nature of generating the mind, now describe its twenty-two divisions. The intermediate verses are: That time is vast, gold, moon, fire, treasure and precious birthplace, sea, vajra, mountain, medicine, friend, wish-fulfilling jewel, sun, song, king, treasury and great path, vehicle, adorned water and, musical instrument, river, clouds, there are twenty-two kinds. Thus it is said, desire, intention, superior intention, application, generosity, discipline, patience, diligence, meditation, wisdom, skillful means, aspiration, power, Prajnaparamita, clairvoyance, merit, wisdom, Bodhipakshika-dharmas, compassion and insight, form, fearlessness, Dharma joy, one vehicle path, possessing Dharmakaya, in order are season, fine gold, crescent moon, fire, great treasure, precious birthplace, ocean, vajra, mountain king, medicine, spiritual friend, wish-fulfilling jewel, sun, pleasant Dharma song, great king, treasury, great road, vehicle, adorned water, sound of musical instrument, river, like clouds, is the root of all white dharmas, will not change until Bodhi, all good dharmas will completely

Increasing, burning the firewood that cuts off the obscurations of the three omniscient ones, satisfying all sentient beings, being the object of the support of precious qualities, not being disturbed even when all undesirable things befall, not being shaken by firm faith, not being moved by the aspect of concentration, pacifying the diseases of afflictions and cognitive obscurations, never abandoning the benefit of sentient beings in any situation, accomplishing the desired fruit as wished, maturing the beings to be tamed, teaching the Dharma desired by the beings to be tamed, accomplishing the benefit of others with unobstructed power, like a treasury of vast accumulations of merit and wisdom, all the noble ones have passed away and followed after, not falling into either samsara or nirvana, thus easily traversing, not being exhausted by holding the Dharma that has been heard and not heard, pleasantly proclaiming to the beings to be tamed who desire liberation, performing the actions of benefiting others without difference, abiding in the Tushita heaven, etc., all can be shown accordingly. Thus, the so-called "earth, gold, moon, fire," etc., explain the twenty-two types of bodhicitta. Among them, the first three are summarized by the ground of the beginner with the small, medium, and large bodhicittas. The one after that is summarized by the path of entering the first ground. The ten after that are summarized by the ten grounds such as the Joyful Ground, which are the objects of the path of seeing and the path of meditation. The five after that are summarized by the special path. The three bodhicittas after that are summarized by the Buddha ground through the doors of preparation, actual practice, and conclusion. Thus, the distinctions of bodhicitta are summarized from the ground of the beginner to the ground of the Buddha. While describing the distinctions, the bodhisattva who generates the initial bodhicitta and so on, strives for the arising of bodhicitta as it is at that time, and the instruction to protect the qualities that have been attained and to increase them in order to accomplish the Dharma that is caused by it, is the oral instruction, practice.
