Chapter Three: Expressing the Nature of Omniscience. Chapter Three: Expressing the Nature of Omniscience. Without fully knowing all bases, one cannot fully know the correct path. Therefore, to express the nature of omniscience, not abiding in samsara or nirvana, it is said, "This is the Prajnaparamita," and so on. The Prajnaparamita of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas realizes the equality of the three times of dharmas in the aspect of non-arising. Therefore, it is hidden from the objects of the Shravakas and others. That which has the nature of an eon is not the near shore of samsara, because it sees the faults through wisdom. It is not the far shore of nirvana, because it benefits others through compassion. It does not abide in the middle, apart from samsara and nirvana, because there is no entity. It is utterly pure. The term "utterly pure" means that because wisdom and compassion are truly realized, one is free from attachment to both samsara and nirvana. As it is said: Not on this shore or the far shore, Nor abiding in between, Knowing the equality of all times, It is called Prajnaparamita. This is what was said. In the chapter on the nature of omniscience, it is taught in a reversed manner. Because the Shravakas and others do not have the knowledge of the equality of the three times, they are far from the true Prajnaparamita. With only their own realization, the Prajnaparamita is separated from compassion and wisdom. Therefore, it should be understood that they are attached to entities and non-entities, and thus are in samsara or nirvana. Similarly, in the following sections, it should be understood that the teachings are given through the gate of following, the gate of reversing, or the gate of both. In the manner of "Whatever is dependent arising, you consider that to be emptiness," knowing the equality of the three times is the same as realizing the meaning of entities. But isn't this present in everything? How is it that the Shravakas and others are far from the true Prajnaparamita?

Nāgasena. The Blessed One, "also thus," etc., is a request. The word "also" not only refers to other forms of things, etc., but also to "not abiding anywhere in that way." Therefore, the word "also" has the characteristic of manifest clinging. It will be abandoned, it will be distanced, which means that in that time and in future times, it will be stated in order. If there is doubt about why knowing by characteristics leads to being distant from the Mother of the Victorious Ones, it is greeted with "Why is that?" and then "Subhūti, from name," etc., is spoken. Among these, what is merely designated by "Prajñāpāramitā," etc., is name. The object of the characteristics of complete imputation, etc., is the characteristic. Perversion in the place of clinging is attachment. For example, the object of a snake conjured by a magician appears, but those who do not recognize its own essence, due to clinging to the object's appearance, do not see the absence of inherent existence. Similarly, if good spiritual friends, etc., lack skillful means, and if one recognizes that they have characteristics, then attachment arises to the object of the perverted characteristic. Therefore, for those who do not know the self-nature of things, such as Śrāvakas, there is no complete knowledge of equality. Therefore, for them, the Mother of the Victorious Ones becomes distant. Bodhisattvas, etc., who have eliminated the characteristics of delusion of clinging to the appearance of things, completely know forms, etc., that is, they completely know their equality. Therefore, it is implied by the force of meaning that this Mother is very close to them. It is said, "Blessed One, like this," etc. The so-called "these attachments" refer to names, etc. When "how much" is mentioned, it includes very pure, etc. The so-called "well-spoken" is because it is spoken in opposition to the scriptures and realizations of Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas. The so-called "well-shown" is because it is the complete Mahāyāna scripture. The so-called "extremely ultimate" means realizing the ultimate of all qualities.

No. These are the distinctions between Śrāvakas and Bodhisattvas. It is said: "Through the door of clinging to characteristics, it is said to be distant because it is not skillful in means; it is said to be truly near by those who are skillful in means." It is said. Thus, following from being distant from the Prajñāpāramitā, although it is the antidote to Śrāvakas and others, it is to be abandoned because of engaging in the inverted clinging to reality, therefore, to show that it is the uncommon quality of Bodhisattvas and others, the venerable Subhūti said, "What is clinging?" etc. Empty means knowing that it is without the self that is completely conceived by the heretics. It is combined with the meaning that will be explained below. Generating the first mind, here, generating the mind is the proximate cause of the Dharma of the Bodhipakṣa such as giving. Only this is said to be offering with immeasurable and other quantities. How is generating the mind clinging? As it is said, the noble Subhūti, "By what name?" etc. Because of engaging in inversion, Kauśika, if, etc., is said. This is the first mind of the Bodhisattva, when the Bodhicitta is truly known in this way with the manner of manifest clinging, and likewise, this first mind of Bodhi should be dedicated, when dedicating in this way with the manner of manifest clinging, at that time, this name is clinging, which is the meaning of the words. Why is it inverted in this way? Sons or daughters of good family, etc., are said. Not being able to dedicate means that the unproduced nature of the mind itself, that is, the dedication mind that is divided by the twelve kinds of distinctions as previously stated, therefore, it is not possible to dedicate. Because this is the proximate cause, it is also not possible to truly know with the nature of one and many, it should be understood in this way. Because it is the occasion for the two words of truly knowing and dedicating. It is said, because the emptiness of the aggregates such as form and the three times
