If I, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, meditate on the recollection of the Sangha, Subhuti, here, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he meditates on the recollection of the Sangha, that is, he recollects the Sangha of the Hearers of the Blessed One, as well as the morality, concentration, wisdom, liberation, and the four pairs of beings with the perfection of the vision of the knowledge of liberation, and the eight types of beings, and contemplates them as the nature of non-substantiality. Why is that? Because they have no self-nature. Whatever has no self-nature is non-substantial. Because of non-substantiality, one cannot recollect non-substantiality. Why is that? Because the absence of recollection and attention is the recollection of the Sangha. Subhuti, thus the Bodhisattva Mahasattva trains in the recollection of the Sangha, and with the nature of non-substantiality, he perfects it up to the All-Knowingness. He will awaken to the nature of non-substantiality of all dharmas, and for that, there is neither the perception of substantiality nor the perception of non-substantiality. What need is there to mention even a dust of the karma of recollection, or being separated from recollection? This is called the recollection of the Sangha. Subhuti, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva meditate on the recollection of morality? Subhuti, here, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, when he meditates on the recollection of morality, he abides in morality that is not violated, without fault, unmixed, without defilement, without attachment, independent, praised by the wise, extremely perfect, and accomplishing concentration. He contemplates that morality as the nature of non-substantiality. Why is that? Because this is because that has no self-nature. Whatever has no self-nature is non-substantial. Because of non-substantiality, one cannot recollect non-substantiality. Why is that? Because this is because there is no recollection and attention.

Absence of action is mindfulness of discipline. Subhuti, thus a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva trains in mindfulness of discipline, and by means of the nature of non-things, perfects it until the attainment of all-knowingness. That is, all dharmas will be manifestly and completely enlightened in the nature of non-things. If there is no perception of things as existing, or no perception of things as non-existing, then how much more so is it that there is not even a speck of the activity of mindfulness, or separation from mindfulness? This is called mindfulness of discipline. Subhuti, how does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, when practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, become mindful of giving? Subhuti, here, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, he cultivates mindfulness of giving, and by means of the nature of non-things, he should be mindful of giving, without considering what is material giving and what is Dharma giving. If he completely gives away limbs and hands, what need is there to mention other things? Even though he completely gives in this way, he does not think, "I am the one who completely gives, this thing is what has been given, and to this one giving should be done." Why is that? It is because in those non-things there is no inherent nature. Whatever has no inherent nature is a non-thing. Because of non-things, one cannot be mindful of non-things. Why is that? It is because absence of mindfulness and absence of attention is mindfulness of giving. Subhuti, thus a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva trains in mindfulness of giving, and by means of the nature of non-things, perfects it until the attainment of all-knowingness. That is, all dharmas will be manifestly and completely enlightened in the nature of non-things.

If a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, what is the recollection of the gods? Subhuti, here, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva cultivates the recollection of the gods, he contemplates in the manner of non-substantiality those gods who are born in the retinue of the Four Great Kings, and those who are born in the retinue of the Thirty-three Gods, and the gods of Yama, Tushita, Nirmāṇarati, Paranirmita-vaśavartin, and those gods who dwell in the realm of form and those who dwell in the formless realm, the gods who do not return because of arising. Why is that? Because, just like that, those gods do not have intrinsic existence; whatever does not have intrinsic existence is non-substantial. Because of non-substantiality, one cannot recollect non-substantiality. Why is that? Because, just like that, without recollection and without contemplation, that is the recollection of the gods. Subhuti, in that way, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva trains in the recollection of the gods and perfects it until the attainment of all-knowingness. In that way, he will become fully enlightened in the intrinsic nature of all phenomena as non-substantial. If there is no perception of substantiality or non-substantiality in that, then what need is there to mention even the slightest trace of the activity of recollection, or separation from recollection? This is the recollection of the gods. Subhuti, in that way, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva applies the gradual activity of contemplating the six recollections. He applies the gradual training and the gradual practice. All of that is without object. Why is that? Because, just like that, there is no intrinsic existence in that. That is the six recollections. Sixth, the chapter on training by gradually entering into the empowerment of gradual realization.
