Sixth, the chapter on gradual learning through the power of gradual realization. Sixth, the chapter on gradual learning through the power of gradual realization. Volume Sixty-Three. When this had been said, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, if it is so that a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, with all dharmas being of the nature of non-substantiality, through the four meditations and five superknowledges, manifestly awakens to unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment, Blessed One, how does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva gradually practice, gradually learn, and gradually diligently apply himself to the nature of non-substantiality of all dharmas, and by what gradual practice, gradual learning, and gradual diligent application will he manifestly awaken to unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment?" The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, in this way, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, first from the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, and the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, and the Arhats who have served many Buddhas, and the Non-returners, and the Once-returners, and the Stream-enterers, hears that the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, are of the nature of non-substantiality, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas are of the nature of non-substantiality, the Pratyekabuddhas are of the nature of non-substantiality, the Arhats are of the nature of non-substantiality, the Non-returners are of the nature of non-substantiality, the Once-returners are of the nature of non-substantiality, the Stream-enterers are of the nature of non-substantiality, all the Aryas are of the nature of non-substantiality, and the nature of all conditioned things is so small that there is not even a place the size of the tip of a hair. What does that Bodhisattva-Mahasattva do? The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, are also of the nature of non-substantiality, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, the Arhats, the Non-returners, the Once-

If I, the speaker, and those who have entered the stream are also of the nature of non-substantiality, then, whether I attain complete and perfect enlightenment in unsurpassed perfect enlightenment and become a Buddha, or whether I do not attain complete and perfect enlightenment, all phenomena are of the nature of non-substantiality. In any case, I must attain complete and perfect enlightenment in unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, and make all beings who engage in the concept of substantiality rejoice in non-substantiality. Subhuti, that Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, in order to completely liberate all sentient beings from suffering, enters into unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, and he learns gradual actions, gradual precepts, and gradual practices. By learning these, the previous Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas attained complete and perfect enlightenment in unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, and he also begins such gradual actions, gradual precepts, and gradual practices. He first practices generosity paramita, morality paramita, patience paramita, diligence paramita, meditation paramita, and wisdom paramita, that is, he practices these six perfections. This is a general overview of gradual realization. Furthermore, Subhuti, from the moment a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva generates the first thought, when he practices generosity paramita, he himself also gives completely, encourages others to give, praises the merits of giving, and rejoices in and praises other beings who give. Through this giving, he obtains great wealth, and then gives with a non-miserly mind, giving food to those who want food, drink to those who want drink, vehicles to those who want vehicles, clothes to those who want clothes, incense to those who want incense, garlands to those who want garlands, perfume to those who want perfume, and bedding to those who want bedding.

Bedding. To those who desire a dwelling, give a dwelling. To those who lack a lamp, give a lamp. And even any of the necessities of people, give to them. Through that very giving, one establishes beings in morality, samadhi, wisdom, liberation, and the vision of the wisdom of liberation. Possessing the aggregates of morality, the aggregates of samadhi, the aggregates of wisdom, the aggregates of liberation, and the aggregates of the vision of the wisdom of liberation, one transcends the level of hearers and solitary realizers and enters the faultless state of a bodhisattva. Having entered the faultless state of a bodhisattva, one makes the buddha-field completely pure. Having made the buddha-field completely pure, one brings beings to complete maturity. Having brought beings to complete maturity, one attains omniscience. Having attained omniscience, one turns the wheel of dharma. Having turned the wheel of dharma, one establishes beings individually in the three vehicles. Having established beings individually in the three vehicles, one liberates them completely from samsara. Subhuti, thus a bodhisattva mahasattva thoroughly applies himself to the activity that is perfected by giving, thoroughly applies himself to the training that is perfected, and thoroughly applies himself to the practice that is perfected, and all of that is without object. Why is that? Because, Subhuti, the expression, "For it, there is no intrinsic nature," is the perfected realization of the perfection of giving. Furthermore, Subhuti, from the time a bodhisattva mahasattva first generates the mind, he takes it up closely. He himself also engages in the perfection of morality. He also exhorts others to engage in the perfection of morality. He speaks of the good qualities of the perfection of morality. He also speaks of the good qualities of those others who engage in the perfection of morality, and he engages in joy with concord. Through that morality, he enables beings to thoroughly obtain the greatness of gods and the greatness of humans. He gives wealth to beings who have no wealth, and he thoroughly establishes them in morality and samadhi.
