He replied: Blessed One, that is not so. Blessed One, there is no thing in that emanation. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Is there such a path to be cultivated in that emanation, by which one would not become completely afflicted, nor completely purified? He replied: Blessed One, that is not so. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Is there anything by which one would become completely afflicted or completely purified? He replied: Blessed One, that is not so. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, it is so, it is so. Just as there is nothing that would become completely afflicted and completely purified, so there is neither complete affliction nor complete purification. Why is that? Because beings become completely afflicted or completely purified by abiding in self and what belongs to self, but seeing reality does not become completely afflicted or completely purified. Just as seeing reality does not become completely afflicted or completely purified, so there is neither complete affliction nor complete purification. This is said to be the activity of thoroughly establishing the antidote thought for abandoning the absence of the four perversions. Then, the venerable Subhuti said this to the Blessed One: Blessed One, just as seeing reality does not become completely afflicted or completely purified, so not seeing reality does not become completely afflicted or completely purified, because all dharmas are of the nature of non-things. Therefore, Blessed One, for non-things, there is no complete affliction or

Not purified, Blessed One, the very nature has all the afflictions; not purified, the very nature of non-things also has all the afflictions; if not purified, what is the purification spoken of by the Blessed One? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, whatever is the equality of all dharmas, that is what I have spoken of as purification. Asked: Blessed One, what is the equality of all dharmas? The Blessed One said: Suchness, non-erroneous suchness, non-other suchness, dharma-nature, dharma-realm, dharma-abidingness, dharma-flawlessness, and the ultimate reality, whether the Tathagatas appear or not, the dharma-abidingness and realm that abides thus are like this. This, called the dharma-realm, Subhuti, is purification. It is expressed by worldly terms, but it is inexpressible and unutterable. The dharma that transcends the path of all sounds and words is called the activity of establishing purification. Asked: Blessed One, if all dharmas are like dreams, like reflections, like mirages, like illusions, like apparitions, how can a Bodhisattva Mahasattva perfect the perfection of giving, the perfection of morality, the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of meditation, the perfection of wisdom, the perfection of skillful means, the perfection of aspiration, the perfection of strength, and the perfection of knowledge? All dharmas are like dreams, like reflections, like mirages, like illusions, all dharmas are like apparitions. I will perfect the perfection of giving to non-things, to non-entities. I will perfect the perfection of morality, the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of meditation, the perfection of wisdom, the perfection of skillful means, the perfection of aspiration, the perfection of strength, and the perfection of knowledge. I will perfect inner emptiness, I will perfect outer emptiness, I will perfect inner-outer emptiness, I will perfect the emptiness of the nature of non-things.

should be completely fulfilled. The four mindfulnesses should be completely fulfilled. The four right abandonments, the four miraculous legs, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven branches of enlightenment, and the eightfold noble path should be completely fulfilled. The four noble truths, the four meditations, the four immeasurables, the four formless absorptions, the eight liberations, the nine successive abidings, emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, the five clairvoyances, all samadhis, and all dharani gates should be completely fulfilled. The ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, great love, great compassion, and the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha should be completely fulfilled. The thirty-two marks of a great being should be completely fulfilled. The eighty minor marks should be completely fulfilled. Great light should be completely fulfilled. One should completely know with the mind the thoughts of the minds of all sentient beings in the realms of the ten directions, and the Brahma's voice that teaches the Dharma according to their inclinations with a single sound should be completely fulfilled. Thus, one generates the mind for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Those dharmas that you have spoken of are like a dream, like an echo, like a mirage, like an illusion, and like a transformation." Blessed One, a dream is not real. An echo, a mirage, an illusion, and a transformation are not real. Blessed One, since they are not real, how does one practice the Perfection of Giving and the Perfection of Ethics?"
