will not attain Buddhahood. Even by generating a subsequent mind, one will not manifest and completely awaken into unsurpassed, perfect, and complete Buddhahood. Even without relying on generating a subsequent mind, one will not manifest and completely awaken into unsurpassed, perfect, and complete Buddhahood; rather, one will manifest and completely awaken into unsurpassed, perfect, and complete Buddhahood. This is answered with the example of ghee. The questioner asks: Blessed One, in that case, even by generating the first mind, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva will not manifest and completely awaken into unsurpassed, perfect, and complete Buddhahood; and without relying on generating the first mind, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva will not manifest and completely awaken into unsurpassed, perfect, and complete Buddhahood; and even without generating a subsequent mind, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva will not manifest and completely awaken into unsurpassed, perfect, and complete Buddhahood; and without relying on not generating a subsequent mind, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva will not manifest and completely awaken into unsurpassed, perfect, and complete Buddhahood. Blessed One, it is wondrous that a Bodhisattva Mahasattva manifests and completely awakens into unsurpassed, perfect, and complete Buddhahood, which is profound dependent origination! The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Do you think that what has ceased will arise again? The questioner answers: Blessed One, no, that is called profound arising. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Do you think that what has arisen has the nature of ceasing? Subhuti answers: Blessed One, it has the nature of ceasing. The Sugata has the nature of ceasing. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Will what has the nature of ceasing cease? The questioner answers: Blessed One, no, that is called profound ceasing. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Will whatever is Suchness, as it is, remain as it is in its very nature? The questioner answers: Blessed One, yes.

will remain exactly as it is. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Is that which remains exactly as it is in suchness permanent? He replied: Blessed One, it is not. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Is suchness profound? He replied: Blessed One, it is profound. The Tathagata's saying 'profound' refers to suchness being profound. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Is suchness mind? He replied: Blessed One, it is not. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Is there mind other than suchness? Subhuti replied: Blessed One, there is not, which is known as profound knowable. The Blessed One said: Does suchness truly see suchness? He replied: Blessed One, it does not, which is known as profound knowledge. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Is someone who acts in that way acting in the profound perfection of wisdom? He replied: Blessed One, someone who acts in that way is acting in the profound perfection of wisdom. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? What is someone who acts in that way acting upon? He replied: Blessed One, someone who acts in that way is not acting upon anything. Why is that? Blessed One, in this way, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva acts in the perfection of wisdom and abides in suchness, these bonds do not arise or continue. Why is that? Blessed One, there are no bonds whatsoever in suchness, and there is no action upon it. This is known as acting upon the ultimate meaning where there is no complete movement by profound action. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what does he act upon and what does he act upon? He replied: He acts upon the ultimate meaning where there is no complete movement by duality. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think?

Does that which practices the ultimate meaning practice in the all-pervading practice or practice in characteristics? He replied: Bhagavan, it is not so. The Bhagavan said: Subhuti, what do you think? Does he destroy the perception of characteristics or the perception of no characteristics? He replied: Bhagavan, it is not so. That which is called non-duality is profound. The Bhagavan said: Subhuti, if so, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva destroy the perception of characteristics or no characteristics? He replied: Bhagavan, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he does not think: I should destroy characteristics in this way, or I should destroy no characteristics. Bhagavan, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, if he does not perfect the ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, great loving-kindness, great compassion, and the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha, he will never realize unexcelled perfect enlightenment. Bhagavan, this is the skillful means of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva. That skillful means does not make any dharmas into existence or non-existence. Why is that? Bhagavan, it is because the Bodhisattva Mahasattva wants to know that the self-nature of all dharmas is emptiness. Having dwelt in that self-nature emptiness, for the sake of sentient beings, he enters into the three samadhis. Those samadhis cause sentient beings to mature. Bhagavan, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva enter into the samadhis for the sake of sentient beings, and how do those samadhis cause sentient beings to mature? The Bhagavan said: Subhuti, here, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva dwells in the three samadhis, and those sentient beings who practice in the perception of discrimination are in emptiness.
