Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, how should a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, who aspires to realize the definite arising of unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment, abide?" The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, here, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, who wishes to realize perfect enlightenment and attain complete Buddhahood, should abide in equanimity towards all sentient beings. One should generate a mind of equality towards all sentient beings; one should not generate a mind of inequality. One should focus on all sentient beings with a mind of equality. One should generate great love towards all sentient beings. One should generate great compassion towards all sentient beings. One should focus on all sentient beings with a mind of love. One should focus on all sentient beings with a mind of great compassion. One should not focus with a violent mind. One should generate a mind of subduing pride towards sentient beings. One should focus on all sentient beings without wavering; this is the lesser of those belonging to the heat stage. One should generate a mind of benefit towards all sentient beings; one should not generate a mind of harm. One should focus on sentient beings with a mind of benefit. One should not focus with a mind of harm. One should generate a mind without anger towards all sentient beings. One should focus on all sentient beings with a mind without anger.
