From the perception of all-aspects knowledge, one turns back. From the perception of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas, one turns back. From the perception of bodhisattvas, one turns back. Until the perception of buddhas, one turns back. Why is that? Subhūti, because thus, a non-returning bodhisattva mahāsattva, since all dharmas are empty of their own nature, enters the bodhisattva path without fault, therefore he does not fixate on even a mote of dust. Since he does not fixate, he does not manifest and create. Since he does not manifest and create, there is no birth. This is what a non-returning bodhisattva is called, the tolerance of non-arising dharmas.

Now, the wicked one approaches, dissuading (the Bodhisattva's) faith, (saying) that this omniscience is like space, is the nature of non-entity, empty by its own nature. These dharmas are also like space, are the nature of non-entity, empty by their own nature. Thus, all dharmas are like space, empty by the nature of non-entity, wherein who attains complete enlightenment, by what does one attain complete enlightenment, and what are the dharmas to be completely enlightened are all unattainable, because all these dharmas are like space, are the nature of non-entity, empty by their own nature, therefore, like this, thinking to attain complete enlightenment to the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, this will make you suffer in vain, this is taught by the demon, this is not spoken by the perfectly enlightened Buddha. Therefore, son of good family, do not use those mental activities fruitlessly for a long time, otherwise you will suffer and fall. If he says so, then the son of good family and daughter of good family of the Bodhisattva vehicle, having heard those words, should think like this: Like this, my turning away from the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment is the work of the demon, although all dharmas are like space, are the nature of non-entity, empty by their own nature, but those sentient beings have not known, have not seen, have not understood, therefore I should put on the armor that is like space, is the nature of non-entity, empty by its own nature, and attain complete enlightenment to omniscience, and then proclaim the Dharma to all sentient beings. One should establish immeasurable sentient beings in the fruit of stream-enterer, as well as the fruit of once-returner, and the fruit of non-returner, and the state of Arhat. One should establish (sentient beings) in Pratyekabuddha enlightenment, one should establish (sentient beings) in unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. After that, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva upholds from the moment of generating the first thought.

Having heard these dharmas, one should make the mind firm. One should make the mind unwavering. One should make the mind un-distracted. Endowed with a firm mind, an unwavering mind, and an un-distracted mind, if one practices the pāramitās, the bodhisattva will enter without fault, this is called knowing the dharma in suffering. Then, the venerable Subhūti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, is a bodhisattva mahāsattva who is irreversible called irreversible? Or is a bodhisattva mahāsattva who is reversible called irreversible?" The Blessed One replied: "Subhūti, a bodhisattva mahāsattva who is irreversible is called irreversible." Subhūti asked: "Blessed One, for what reason is a bodhisattva mahāsattva who is irreversible called irreversible?" The Blessed One replied: "Subhūti, whichever bodhisattva mahāsattva turns away from the level of a śrāvaka or the level of a pratyekabuddha, Subhūti, that is an irreversible bodhisattva mahāsattva, and is called an irreversible bodhisattva mahāsattva. Subhūti, whichever bodhisattva mahāsattva turns away from the level of a śrāvaka or the level of a pratyekabuddha, Subhūti, that is a bodhisattva mahāsattva, and is called reversible. Subhūti, by these aspects, these signs, and these characteristics, one should recognize the characteristics of a bodhisattva mahāsattva who is irreversible. Subhūti, a bodhisattva mahāsattva who possesses these aspects, these signs, and these characteristics cannot be turned away from unexcelled, perfect enlightenment by Māra Pāpīyas, this is called acceptance of subsequent knowledge of suffering.
