The Path of the Solitary Buddha. The Path of the Solitary Buddha. Then, some of the gods from those assemblies thought to themselves: "Whatever the yakshas say—the language of the yakshas, the words of the yakshas, the speech of the yakshas, and the detailed descriptions of the yakshas—if spoken, it might be possible to understand. But what the venerable Subhuti explains, elaborates, teaches, and closely teaches about the Perfection of Wisdom is impossible to understand." Then, the venerable Subhuti, fully knowing the thoughts of those gods with his mind, said to those gods: "Gods, is what is said impossible to understand?" The gods said: "Venerable Subhuti, it is impossible to understand." Subhuti said: "Gods, in this way, not even a single letter is uttered. Whatever is not uttered is impossible to hear. Whatever is impossible to hear is impossible to understand. Why is that? The Perfection of Wisdom is not a letter; therefore, there is no knowing, no hearing, no teaching. The enlightenment of the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Buddhas is also without letters. Gods, for example, if a Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened Buddha were to emanate an emanation, and he also emanated the fourfold assembly of monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen, and then he taught the Dharma to those fourfold assemblies, gods, what do you think of that? Is there anyone there who has taught, heard, or understood?" The gods said: "Venerable Subhuti, there is not." Subhuti said: "Gods, likewise, all dharmas are like illusions. There, no one teaches, no one hears, no one understands. Gods, for example, if a man, asleep in a dream, sees a Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened Buddha teaching the Dharma, gods, what do you think of that? Is there anyone there who has taught, heard, or understood?"

The sons of the gods said: Venerable Subhuti does not exist. Subhuti said: Sons of the gods, likewise, all dharmas are like a dream, in which no one indicates, no one hears, and no one knows. Sons of the gods, for example, if two men sit in a mountain valley and speak of the virtues of the Buddha, also speak of the virtues of the Dharma, also speak of the virtues of the Sangha, and from those two there arises an echo, sons of the gods, what do you think of that? Can that single echo know the sound of the second echo? The sons of the gods said: Venerable Subhuti does not exist. Subhuti said: Sons of the gods, likewise, all dharmas are like an echo, in which no one indicates, there is no hearing, and there is no knowing. Sons of the gods, for example, a magician, or a skilled disciple of a magician, manifests at a crossroads on a great road a Tathagata, an Arhat, a perfectly complete Buddha, and also manifests a retinue of four assemblies, and then he teaches the Dharma to the manifested four assemblies, sons of the gods, what do you think of that? Is there anyone who indicates, or hears, or knows? The sons of the gods said: Venerable Subhuti does not exist. Subhuti said: Sons of the gods, likewise, all dharmas are like an illusion, in which no one indicates, there is no hearing, and there is no knowing, this is called an indication that does not require indication by others. Then, those sons of the gods thought to themselves: Alas, this venerable Subhuti, the noble one, is one who elucidates the Prajnaparamita, he shows what is deeper than the deep, and more subtle than the subtle.

It is not earth. It is not formations. The nature of consciousness is neither profound nor subtle. The nature of the eye is neither profound nor subtle. It is not the ear. It is not the nose. It is not the tongue. It is not the body. The nature of the mind is neither profound nor subtle. The nature of the earth element is neither profound nor subtle. It is not the water element. It is not the fire element. It is not the wind element. It is not the space element. The nature of the consciousness element is neither profound nor subtle. The nature of generosity, the perfection of giving, is neither profound nor subtle. It is not the perfection of moral discipline. It is not the perfection of patience. It is not the perfection of diligence. It is not the perfection of meditation. The nature of the perfection of wisdom is neither profound nor subtle. The nature of inner emptiness is neither profound nor subtle. It is not outer emptiness. It is not inner and outer emptiness. The nature between the emptiness of the nature of non-things is neither profound nor subtle. The nature of the mindfulnesses is neither profound nor subtle. Similarly, the right abandonments, the feet of miraculous power, the faculties, the powers, the limbs of enlightenment, the noble eightfold path, the noble truths, the superknowledges, the four immeasurables, the four concentrations, the four formless absorptions, the ten powers of the Thus-Gone One, the four fearlessnesses, the four individual perfect knowledges, the nature of the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha is neither profound nor subtle. The nature of all samādhis and dhāraṇī gates is neither profound nor subtle. Up to all-knowingness is neither profound nor subtle. Why is that? Thus, the nature of all-knowingness is neither profound nor subtle. Then, those sons of the gods thought thus: In this teaching of the Dharma, there is no form. There is no feeling. There is no perception. Formations
