The Practice of Renunciation. The Practice of Renunciation. The renunciation of what is to be done specifically. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, the term 'Great Vehicle, Great Vehicle' is used because it will arise subduing the world with its gods, humans, and asuras. Therefore, it is called the Great Vehicle. Blessed One, that Great Vehicle is equal to space. Blessed One, for example, just as space accommodates immeasurable, countless, and limitless sentient beings, so too, this Great Vehicle accommodates immeasurable, countless, and limitless sentient beings. Blessed One, for that reason, it is the Great Vehicle of Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas. Blessed One, for example, in space, one does not see going, coming, or abiding. Similarly, in this Great Vehicle, one does not perceive going, coming, or abiding. Blessed One, for example, space, for the sake of the equality of the three times, does not perceive a prior limit, does not perceive a later limit, and does not perceive a middle. Similarly, this Great Vehicle, for the sake of the equality of the three times, does not perceive a prior limit, does not perceive a later limit, and does not perceive a middle. Thus, this is called the Great Vehicle, Great Vehicle." The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, it is so, it is so. These six perfections are the Great Vehicle of Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, namely, the perfection of generosity, the perfection of ethics, the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of meditation, and the perfection of wisdom. This is called the Great Vehicle of Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas. Furthermore, Subhuti, the Great Vehicle of Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas is as follows: all the doors of dharani and all the doors of samadhi, such as the samadhi of heroic progress and the samadhi that is liberated and unsoiled like space because it is without attachment.

Therefore, Subhuti, this is the Mahayana of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. Furthermore, Subhuti, the Mahayana of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is as follows: namely, between inner emptiness and the emptiness of the nature of non-things, this is called the Mahayana of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. Furthermore, Subhuti, the Mahayana of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is not like this: namely, the four mindfulnesses, the four right abandonments, the four legs of magical power, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven branches of enlightenment, the eight noble path branches, the four meditations, the four immeasurables, the four formless absorptions, the ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, the four specific correct knowledges, and the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha. This is the Mahayana of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. Furthermore, Subhuti, you said this: "The Mahayana will arise, overwhelming the world including gods, humans, and asuras." What is meant by the world including gods, humans, and asuras? It refers to the desire realm, the form realm, and the formless realm. Subhuti, if the desire realm were to become Suchness, and were not mistaken, that Suchness would not be a different Suchness, it would be Suchness, not inverted, correct, truly as it is, permanent, stable, real, and an unchanging entity of Dharma nature. If it were not non-things, then this Mahayana would not overwhelm the world including gods, humans, and asuras and arise. Subhuti, however, the desire realm is conceptualized, established, and merely universally shown, not truly as it is, and all of this is impermanent, unstable, unreal, and of a changing Dharma nature. Because it is non-things, therefore this Mahayana overwhelms the world including gods, humans, and asuras and arises. Subhuti, if the form realm were to become Suchness, and were not mistaken, that

If Suchness were not other than Suchness, but were Suchness, being non-inverted, true, as it is, and were a thing of the nature of being permanent, stable, constant, and unchanging, if it were not without things, then this Great Vehicle would not overwhelm and appear in the world, including gods, humans, and asuras. Subhuti, however, the realm of form is merely conceptualized, fabricated, and universally shown, not as it is. All of this is impermanent, unstable, and not constant, being of the nature of change.
