The Collection of Grounds. The Collection of Grounds. Subhuti, how do you say that a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva has truly entered the Great Vehicle? Subhuti, here, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the six perfections and ascends from ground to ground. Subhuti, how does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practice the six perfections and ascend from ground to ground? For example, all dharmas are without change. Why is that? Because no dharma comes or goes, changes or nearly changes. However, all dharmas do not cling to what they are, and in the mind, they completely purify the ground, and do not truly see that ground. What is the purification of the ground of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva? Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abiding on the first ground should perform these ten purifications. What are the ten? They are: purifying the superior intention by means of non-attachment; purifying beneficial things because of non-attachment to characteristics; purifying equanimity towards all sentient beings because of non-attachment to sentient beings; purifying generosity because of non-attachment to giving, bestowing, and receiving; purifying reliance on a virtuous friend because one should not be arrogant about it; purifying the search for dharma because of non-attachment to all dharmas; purifying repeated arising because of non-attachment to home; purifying desire for the body of the Buddha because of non-attachment to the marks of excellence and beauty; purifying the detailed explanation of dharma because of non-attachment to the distinctions of dharma; purifying the removal of the pride of ego because of non-attachment to the very existence of dharma; and purifying truthful speech because of non-attachment to words. Subhuti, these ten purifications are what a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abiding on the first ground should do. Subhuti, furthermore, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abiding on the second ground should repeatedly attend to these eight dharmas and diligently apply himself to them.

What are the eight? They are as follows: completely pure morality, knowing what has been done and perceiving what has been done, abiding in the power of patience, having experienced great joy, completely not abandoning all sentient beings, manifesting great compassion, serving the guru with faith and respectfully attending with the perception of the teacher as a Buddha, diligently seeking the perfections. Subhuti, these eight dharmas are what a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abiding on the second ground should repeatedly keep in mind and diligently practice. Furthermore, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abiding on the third ground should abide in five dharmas. What are the five? They are as follows: not being satisfied with much learning and also not being attached to letters; distinguishing the giving of Dharma without material possessions and also not becoming arrogant because of it; generating roots of virtue to purify the Buddha-field completely and also not becoming arrogant because of dedicating it; not being weary of immeasurable samsara and also not becoming arrogant because of it; abiding in knowing shame and having modesty and also not becoming arrogant because of it. Subhuti, these five dharmas are what a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abiding on the third ground should abide in. Furthermore, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abiding on the fourth ground should take up and abide in these ten dharmas, and should not abandon them. What are the ten? They are as follows: abiding in solitary places, having few desires, being content, not abandoning the qualities of learning and diminished resources, not abandoning the training, criticizing the qualities of desire, generating a mind endowed with nirvana, completely giving away all possessions, having no timid mind, not depending on all things. Subhuti, these ten dharmas are what a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abiding on the fourth ground should not abandon, but should truly take up and abide in. Furthermore, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abiding on the fifth ground should
