The collection of paths. The collection of paths. Furthermore, Subhuti, the Great Vehicle of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva is as follows: the four mindfulnesses. What are the four? Mindfulness of the body, mindfulness of feelings, mindfulness of mind, and mindfulness of phenomena. Among these, what is mindfulness of the body? Subhuti, here, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva is diligent and possesses mindfulness, possesses awareness, and with mindfulness, eliminates attachment and displeasure towards the world. He contemplates the body in the inner body, and abides in a non-conceptual manner, not conceptualizing the discriminations related to the body. He contemplates the body in the outer body, and abides in a non-conceptual manner, not conceptualizing the discriminations related to the body. He contemplates the body in both the inner and outer body, and abides in a non-conceptual manner, not conceptualizing the discriminations related to the body. Similarly, he contemplates phenomena in the inner feelings, mind, and phenomena, and abides in a non-conceptual manner, not conceptualizing the discriminations related to phenomena. He contemplates phenomena in the outer feelings, mind, and phenomena, and abides in a non-conceptual manner, not conceptualizing the discriminations related to phenomena. He contemplates phenomena in both the inner and outer feelings, mind, and phenomena, and abides in a non-conceptual manner, not conceptualizing the discriminations related to phenomena. Subhuti, how does the Bodhisattva Mahasattva abide contemplating the body in the inner body? Subhuti, here, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, when walking, knows well that he is walking. When standing, he knows well that he is standing. When sitting, he knows well that he is sitting. When lying down, he knows well that he is lying down. He knows well that the body is in a comfortable or uncomfortable state. Subhuti, thus, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva is diligent and possesses awareness, possesses mindfulness, eliminates attachment and displeasure towards the world, and contemplates the body in the inner body.

Moreover, abiding in the manner of non-objectification, non-discrimination is the discrimination of having a body. Furthermore, Subhuti, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, abiding by observing the body in the inner body, acts with mindfulness whether going or returning. He also acts with mindfulness whether looking around or looking in various ways. Contracting and stretching, wearing the monastic skirt, carrying the alms bowl, wearing the Dharma robe, eating, drinking, chewing, licking, sleeping, dispelling sleepiness, coming, going, standing, sitting, lying down, waking up from sleep, awakening, speaking and not speaking, and also when abiding correctly within, he acts with mindfulness. Subhuti, in this way, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, being diligent, mindful, and possessing mindfulness, eliminates attachment and displeasure towards the world, and although he abides by observing the body in the inner body, that is in the manner of non-objectification, non-discrimination is the discrimination of having a body. Furthermore, Subhuti, when the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva breathes out with mindfulness, he truly knows that he breathes out with mindfulness. When he breathes in with mindfulness, he truly knows that he breathes in with mindfulness. When breathing out long, he truly knows that he breathes out long. When breathing in long, he truly knows that he breathes in long. When breathing out short, he truly knows that he breathes out short. When breathing in short, he truly knows that he breathes in short. Subhuti, it is like this: for example, a potter or a skilled apprentice of a potter, when turning a wheel, truly knows that when turning it long, it is turning long. When turning it short, he truly knows that it is turning short. Subhuti, likewise, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva with mindfulness

When breathing out, one knows exactly that one is breathing out; when breathing in, one knows exactly that one is breathing in. If breathing out long, one knows exactly that one is breathing out long; if breathing out short, one knows exactly that one is breathing out short. If breathing in short, one knows exactly that one is breathing in short; if breathing in short, one knows exactly that one is breathing in short. Subhuti, in this way, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, endowed with diligence, possessing knowledge, possessing mindfulness, having dispelled attachment and discontent towards the world, abides contemplating the body in his own body, yet without perceiving it, not discriminating the discriminations associated with the body. Furthermore, Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva engages in the Perfection of Wisdom, he knows that this very body contains the earth element, the water element, the fire element, and the wind element, thus individually and exactly understanding the elements. Subhuti, for example, just as a butcher of cows or a skilled apprentice of a butcher of cows slaughters a cow with a sharp knife and divides it into four parts, and after dividing it into four parts, either stands or sits and thoroughly examines it, similarly, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva engages in the Perfection of Wisdom, he also knows that this very body contains the earth element, the water element, the fire element, and the wind element, thus individually and exactly thoroughly examining the elements.
