The great evil friend is like this: wicked demons, disguised as Buddhas, come to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva and prevent them from practicing the six perfections, causing them to lose faith and joy, saying: 'Son of good family, what good does it do for you to cultivate the perfection of wisdom? What good does it do for you to cultivate the perfection of meditation? What good does it do for you to cultivate the perfection of diligence? What good does it do for you to cultivate the perfection of patience? What good does it do for you to cultivate the perfection of morality? What good does it do for you to cultivate the perfection of generosity?' Saying such things, but not pointing out the actions of demons, not pointing out the faults of demons, know that this is the evil friend of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva. Furthermore, wicked demons, disguised as Buddhas, go to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva and teach the sutras that are associated with the Shravakas, as well as the verses, predictions, stanzas, self-spoken words, causes, thus-gone-by stories, birth stories, extensive explanations, unprecedented dharmas, metaphors, and discussions, and explain, differentiate, clarify, and fully reveal them. Like this, but not speaking or pointing out these kinds of demonic actions, know that this is the evil friend of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva. Furthermore, wicked demons, disguised as Buddhas, go to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva and say: 'Son of good family, you do not have even a little bit of Bodhicitta, you are not irreversible, and you will not be able to realize the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment.' Are ear contact, nose contact, tongue contact, body contact, and mind contact empty of self or empty by self? Is the feeling born of eye contact empty of self or empty by self? Are the feeling born of ear contact, the feeling born of nose contact, the feeling born of tongue contact, the feeling born of body contact, and the feeling born of mind contact empty of self or empty by self? Is the perfection of giving empty of self or empty by self? Are the perfection of morality, the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of meditation, and the perfection of wisdom empty of self or empty by self? Are the mindfulnesses empty of self or empty by self? Are the right abandonments, the legs of magical power, the faculties, the powers, the limbs of enlightenment, and the paths, up to the unshared qualities of the Buddhas, empty of self or empty by self? If so, what is the use of manifestly and completely awakening to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment?' Such speech, not proclaiming or displaying such demonic deeds, should be recognized as an evil friend of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva. Furthermore, the Blessed One and the Bodhisattvas, as well as the Hearers, are empty. Here, there is no such thing as a Buddha, no such thing as a Bodhisattva, and no such thing as a Hearer. South, West, North, Northeast, Southeast, Southwest, Northwest, Below, Above, all ten directions are also empty of the Blessed One, the Bodhisattvas, and the Hearers. Subhuti, furthermore, evil demons will disguise themselves as Hearers and go to the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, preventing them from contemplating all-knowing wisdom, advising them to contemplate Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, and teaching and instructing them. Such demonic deeds should not be spoken of, should not be shown, and this should be recognized as an evil friend of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. Subhuti, furthermore, evil demons will disguise themselves as Khenpos and Acharyas and go to the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, preventing them from practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva, preventing them from contemplating all-knowing wisdom, advising them to practice the four mindfulnesses, the four right abandonments, the four legs of magical power, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven branches of enlightenment, and the eightfold noble path, advising them to practice emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, and other such dharmas. They will say, "Good son, you should practice these dharmas, attain the Hearer's ground, what use is unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment to you?" Such demonic deeds should not be spoken of, should not be shown, and this should be recognized as an evil friend of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. Subhuti, furthermore, evil demons will disguise themselves as fathers and mothers and come to the Bodhisattva.
