An Explanation of the Categories of Instructions and Subsequent Teachings. An Explanation of the Categories of Instructions and Subsequent Teachings. Now, I shall speak about instructions. Among them, the key to attaining the meaning that one seeks to achieve is instruction. The method for ensuring that the qualities one has attained do not diminish, in order to perfect them, is instruction. Following that, the method for attaining the qualities one has not yet attained is subsequent teaching. To conclude, this Prajñāpāramitā is the instruction and subsequent teaching of the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, as it is taught. These instructions also come in ten forms, as it is said: What is to be instructed is practice, truths and Sugatas, etc., non-attachment, never tiring, the path is completely grasped, the five eyes are to be known, six clairvoyances and qualities, the path of seeing is supreme, the path of meditation, these are the ten instructions. This is what is taught. Among them, the instruction on practice is: "O Śāriputra, when a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva practices the Prajñāpāramitā, he does not truly see the Bodhisattva," beginning from that point. Practicing in a non-attached manner, because that practice is not shared with the Śrāvakas, etc., it is taught from the example of "if this Jambudvīpa were filled entirely with monks like Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana, like a grove of reeds," up to "in each of the ten directions, the world systems are filled with as many grains of sand as there are in the Ganges River, the wisdom of the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva who meditates for one day surpasses them." O Śāriputra, if this Jambudvīpa were filled entirely with monks like Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana, like a grove of reeds, or a grove of fragrant grass, or a grove of sugarcane, or a grove of reeds, or a rice field, or a sesame field, what is the meaning of what was said? The four parts of determination, the path of seeing, and the path of meditation should be combined in order. Like reeds, one cannot endure even small harms of karma and afflictions, and fragrant grass and

Like fire and swords, even when threatened by intense karma and afflictions, the continuity of virtuous roots will never cease; like sugarcane, upon obtaining other states of birth and death, one will be born in the happy realms; the constant practice will not depart from the sweetness of Dharma practice; like an arrow shaft, because it is manifest, it enables the realization of the path of seeing; like a rice field, it is the supreme fruit of the realization of noble beings; like a sesame field, even though it is not different from things like flowers, it is held from how the seen manifests, and by meditating at other times, based on the difference of abandonment, it should be understood like the six similes. Why mention a garden? It is to understand the differences in the types of faculties, etc., of others, such as those who realize warmth, etc. Even if many meanings are examined, one can realize through a single simile. The phrase "in the former, the former" is mentioned to guide the latter similes. If that is the case, why is "or" mentioned at the end? It is to guide the understanding of the happiness of those noble beings who abide in the Dharma of seeing. If that is the case, why are other similes not explained? It is to understand the nature of the aggregation of the various types of natures of those who abide in the Dharma of seeing. Furthermore, if one examines each statement individually, how many similes would have to be stated? One would incur the fault of not being skilled in concise explanation. The words here are: As stated in the sutra, "like the monk Shariputra and Maudgalyayana," this refers to those whose realizations are in accordance with what was said. If one asks, "What is the meaning of the extensive statements such as 'not even close to one in a hundred'?" This refers to the difference in number, the difference in power, the difference in lineage, the difference in cause, and surpassing similes, the wisdom of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva cultivated in a single day is even more excellent. Among them, "not even close to one in a hundred" up to "number and" etc.
