Explanation of the Four Discernments Regarding the Path of Meditation and Its Opposing Factors. Explanation of the Four Discernments Regarding the Path of Meditation and Its Opposing Factors. Now, I shall explain the four discernments regarding the opposing factors of the path of meditation. First, I shall explain the path of meditation, and then I shall explain this. The path of meditation is also encompassed by the nine successively abiding samadhis, and these are encompassed by the transcendent samadhi. Therefore, by way of necessarily indicating it, it is briefly stated in terms of the path of meditation: The nine samadhis with cessation, coming and going in two ways, the consciousness that discerns in desire, taking the boundary of non-absorption, transcendent is the samadhi, one and two, three, four, and five, six and seven and eight surpassing, going differently up to cessation. Thus it is said. The two ways are conforming and non-conforming. As it is said, then entering the samadhi of the lion's complete stretching, after individually examining dependent origination, with the mind of the nine successively abiding samadhis and non-samadhi, in conforming and non-conforming ways, one, two, three, four, five, seven, eight, and nine, the transcendent samadhi is manifested, and one obtains much power as desired. This sutra is: Subhuti, this bodhisattva mahasattva, secluded from desires, secluded from unwholesome dharmas, with investigation and analysis, having attained and abided in the first dhyana endowed with joy and pleasure born of seclusion, likewise having attained and abided up to the samadhi of the cessation of consciousness and feeling, having arisen from that samadhi of cessation, enters the samadhi of neither perception nor non-perception, having arisen from that, enters the samadhi of the place of nothingness, then enters the samadhi of the place of infinite consciousness, then enters the samadhi of the place of infinite space.

Also in this. (Here refers to the first dhyana) Then is the fourth dhyana. Then is the third. Then is the second. Then one enters the first dhyana. Having abandoned that lion-like Samadhi, one enters the surpassing Samadhi. Worthy one, what is the surpassing Samadhi of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva? It is when a Bodhisattva enters the first dhyana, and likewise up to entering cessation. Having arisen from that, one dwells having closely cultivated the first dhyana. Then is cessation. Then is the second dhyana. Then is cessation. Then is the third. Then is cessation. Then is the fourth dhyana. Then is cessation. Then is the sphere of infinite space. Then is cessation. Then is the sphere of infinite consciousness. Then is cessation. Then is the sphere of nothingness. Then is cessation. Then is the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. Having arisen from that, one enters cessation. Having arisen from that, one enters the attainment of neither perception nor non-perception. Having arisen from that, one makes the mind abide equally in the desire realm. From the mind abiding equally, one enters cessation. Having arisen from that, one dwells in the mind not abiding equally. Then one enters neither perception nor non-perception. Having arisen from that, one dwells in the mind not abiding equally. Then is the sphere of a little nothingness. Then one dwells in the mind not abiding equally. Likewise, up to arising from the first dhyana, one dwells in the mind not abiding equally. Whatever, the eight grounds are connected in two ways, having surpassed one, having gone and returned, one goes to the third in dissimilar ways, that is the attainment of surpassing. How is that which is said thus? Is it that the nature of a crow and milk porridge are the same? The situation here is other, having obtained skillful means in such a way, one engages in hundreds of thousands of kotis for countless eons, and it is vast by the very act of attending to and honoring immeasurable Buddhas.

It is said for the sake of instruction, and to know that the path of meditation is constant and continuous. The path of meditation has been explained. Now, I will speak of the four discriminations that correspond to this. Among them, briefly, extensively, and by the Buddha, not fully grasping the teachings, and the three times of past, present, and future having no merit, the virtuous path has three aspects, this is the discrimination of grasping, which is the object of the aspect of combination. That is to say, regarding all dharmas, the discrimination of not knowing the brief, and the discrimination of not knowing the extensive. The Tathagata teaches these dharmas in a brief and extensive way, and Bodhisattvas, etc., completely understand the six perfections in a brief and extensive way, up to the omniscient, all three are also gathered and taught from the seeds of direct perception, and again, they are taught separately from each gate of direct perception, in this way, gathered from the peak of direct perception, and the paths that are taught separately, in order to abandon these discriminations that should be abandoned, one should know the meaning of abandoning. World Honored One, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva seek the brief and extensive of all dharmas? Knowing the suchness of all dharmas is knowing the brief and extensive. Among them, preventing arising and ceasing, and transformation, similarly, knowing not possessing and not being separate from the pure boundary, is knowing the brief and extensive. Bodhisattvas with sharp faculties, etc., proclaim the brief and extensive by means of entering, this is the meaning of understanding by the cause of entering. The discrimination that the Buddha did not teach, as it is said, learning what is taught, is abandoning the darkness of omniscience and the deeds of demons, and the intention of the Buddha, satisfying the beings of the three thousand great thousand worlds with chaotic generosity, and the aggregates of precepts, etc., and the enlightenment of the solitary Buddha.
