Explanation of the Favorable Aspects of Discrimination Explanation of the Favorable Aspects of Discrimination Let us speak of the favorable aspects of discrimination. What is there to speak of in these? The answer is: the four distinctions from the Hearers and others should be spoken of, namely, the distinction of object, the distinction of aspect, the distinction of cause, and the distinction of complete holding. The discriminations of grasping and holding, which will be explained, and the four things to be abandoned on the path of seeing, as well as discrimination and true increase, should also be spoken of. If it is asked, for which favorable aspect of discrimination, which discriminations should be made different, and how the distinctions of small, medium, and large among these should be individually explained, then for that reason, these two verses are placed nearby: By object and by aspect, and by cause and by complete holding, the Bodhisattva's protection, the nature of heat and so forth, just as it is. The four discriminations, complete with reliance, the small, medium, and large, are superior to Hearers, Solitary Realizers, and those who are complete. Thus, endowed with the application of instruction and following instruction, by the nature of purity and so forth through hearing, thinking, and meditating, having obtained the excellent root of virtue that is in accordance with the aspects of liberation, from that arises the root of virtue in accordance with the aspects of discrimination, called the stage of heat, because it is the nature of the forerunner of non-discriminating fire, therefore, like the stage of heat, it is the stage of heat. From that is the peak stage. From that is the stage of patience. From that is the supreme worldly dharma. Why? Because in the stage of heat, acting with small autonomy, the distinction of object is that it focuses on the aspects of impermanence and so forth of the four noble truths. The distinction of aspect is that the truths of suffering and origin have aspects such as not manifesting attachment. The sutra for this is: Shariputra! The form of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva is impermanent, form is suffering, form is emptiness, form is selflessness, and again form is emptiness, form is wish.

Attachment to the saying "there is nothing," as well as especially abiding and knowing all, these are all faults arising from Shariputra's (Śāriputra) Bodhisattva Mahāsattva's attachment to conforming to the Dharma, and so on. This is the distinction between the object and aspect included in the truth of suffering. Regarding the distinction between the object and aspect included in the truth of origin, similarly, saying "this form should be abandoned," with attachment to "this should abandon form," and so on. Therefore, regarding the truth of suffering and origin, one contemplates impermanence and so on, and takes non-attachment and so on as aspects. What should be said then? The Śrāvakas cognize objects through the characteristics of form and so on, and take impermanence and so on as aspects, because this is the antidote to the clinging to "self." The Bodhisattvas cognize objects through the characteristics of impermanence and so on, and take non-attachment and so on as aspects, because this is the antidote to the clinging to "Dharma." The reason why the absence of characteristics is not mentioned here is because, in terms of the aspect of entering, it is intended to explain the two truths. The absence of characteristics is the aspect of cessation and the path in the Mahāyāna, which is explained by "what is the absence of characteristics, and by what path does one eliminate the characteristics of discrimination?" Explaining the absence of characteristics through the aspects of peace is related to the characteristics of real things in the Śrāvakayāna, so there is no contradiction. What is said, "the aspects are non-attachment and so on," needs to be examined. If merely non-attachment is non-attachment, then because it does not exist, it is not suitable as an antidote. If it is said that whatever is not attachment becomes the eye and so on, that is unreasonable. How is it not contradictory? How it is not contradictory is attachment, and how it is an antidote is non-attachment. Again, how is it not contradictory? How is it that existence is universally instigated by untrue discriminations.
