The Lamp for Abandoning Attachment, by Nagarjuna The Lamp for Abandoning Attachment by Nagarjuna The Lamp for Abandoning Attachment is placed. I prostrate to the Three Jewels, the objects of veneration! To firmly establish the means of entering the Dharma, whoever wishes to abandon the suffering of themselves and others, and desires happiness, should practice the sacred Dharma. The distinctions of impermanent phenomena are beyond comprehension. Why are these worlds impermanent? The outer world, such as Mount Meru, the king of mountains, the seven golden mountains, the seven great inner seas, the four continents, subcontinents, and the iron fence, when the fire of the eon arises at the time of destruction, not even a remnant of ashes will remain, and ultimately they will be destroyed by water and wind. What seems stable and certain is unbearable to examine. Years, months, and days cannot be stopped, years and months pass, and the time of destruction is near. The cycle of the four seasons does not stop, summer is warm and growing, winter is cold and dry, good years and bad years, droughts and floods are uncertain. Plants and trees, like leaves flourishing, lose the warmth of the season and are impermanent due to the wind. If it were permanent, why would it change and disappear? Therefore, contemplate these impermanences. The inner world is also impermanent, days and nights pass, and death is ever closer. Bound by the three sufferings of samsara, constantly revolving. Birth, old age, sickness, and death are like the marks of one's own destiny. The Lord of Death, the Mara, is like a heron waiting for fish. In this world, whether great or small, rich or poor, none can escape the grasp of the Lord of Death, the Mara. All those who have died before, always full of hope, accumulate children and wealth, but they themselves go along with both virtue and vice. Children and wealth are of no benefit to the body, therefore do not be attached to children, wealth, and food. If one has wealth but does not strive to do good deeds, then one is a miser guarding the treasures of the world. If one has wisdom but does not practice the sacred Dharma, then one is a forever useless and foolish mute. Therefore, be happy to befriend the poor who have no wealth, and make offerings to those who possess Brahmin qualities. The parents, children, brothers, friends, servants, slaves, and wealth of this world, none will share the suffering, none will come for the sake of death. However, many ignorant beings, for the sake of relatives and friends in this life's samsara, commit various kinds of sins, which are of no benefit.

Now, I myself will fall into the three lower realms. At that time, regret will be of no use, only adding to afflictions. The close friends and relatives we meet in this life, who share similar karma, are like travelers staying in the same place, and will eventually go their separate ways. Even if we accumulate food and wealth through evil deeds and curses, I will have to bear the consequences of those sins and endure ignorance. The accumulated wealth will eventually be taken away by our children and grandchildren, like a bee diligently collecting honey only for others to enjoy. Therefore, even if we have no possessions and live in poverty, as long as we firmly believe in the infallibility of cause and effect and have faith in the Dharma, we can become like a monk with a golden urn by performing virtuous deeds with devotion and offering with faith. Therefore, we should accept the seven noble riches: faith, discipline, generosity, learning, a sense of shame, conscientiousness, and wisdom. The Buddha has declared these to be the seven riches of the noble ones. For example, among riches, contentment is the best, as the teacher of gods and humans has said. If one can be universally content and have a mind of contentment, even without wealth, one can become truly rich. This body, which I cherish so much, will also be discarded on the road like old clothes. All those who dwell on this earth now, not one will remain within a hundred years. Even if one lives past a hundred years, it is rare to find even one out of a hundred thousand. And even those who live to be a hundred years old are mostly confused. Half of the hundred years is controlled by sleep at night, which is no different from unconscious death. The remaining fifty years are exhausted by drunkenness, illness, and various activities. Half of the fifty years are also spent on these things, leaving only twenty-five years of true wakefulness. Even these twenty-five years cannot be fully controlled. We do not know whether we will die tonight or tomorrow night, or suddenly. Therefore, we must strive diligently now. Life is like dew, fleeting and about to disappear. Breath is like mist, about to vanish. The body is like an illusion, appearing to exist but without substance. The mind is like lightning, momentary and ephemeral. The five aggregates are impermanent and will eventually die and change. The vibrant color will be taken away by the disease of afflictions, and the fresh life will be taken away by the lord of death, Mara, like a tree growing on a cliff by the river. Soon, it will become food for crows, dogs, gravediggers, insects, owls, vultures, ravens, magpies, hungry dogs, foxes, and bees. Likewise, if we do not understand the truth of illusion and impermanence, and commit evil deeds for the sake of this body, we are truly foolish and pitiful, blinded by ignorance and afflictions. For the sake of food, wealth, and related enjoyments,
