A concise summary of the general vows. The Elegant Vajra. A concise summary of the general vows. The Elegant Vajra. A concise summary of the general vows is complete. I prostrate to Vajradhara! Having thus made offerings to the teacher, for the sake of the yogis of the path, I will briefly explain the great vows that must be clarified in the three tantras. Those who have entered the tantra of the path, having abided by the three trainings, can also manifest the two benefits. Just as some of the inner family are in darkness, it is not enough to be satisfied with just one, and there are also those who practice in harmony. The Buddha's actions are said to be like using a ladder to tame beings in stages. This endeavor is to establish the body with scripture, the essence, categories, methods of protection, the causes of degeneration, omens, faults, and virtues, and the methods of restoration, explained with ten examples and scriptures. The essence has four roots, and two branches, uncommon and common. The great roots are briefly connected. The number of types of vows, the number of sentient beings, and the number of wrong thoughts, are not known even by the Buddha himself. Therefore, the number of vows that counteract and subdue thoughts is beyond the expression of the Victorious One himself. However, if one grasps the sutra of ignorance, the two bodhicittas, the six teachers, the four brothers, the three mantras, the four mudras, and the ten secrets should be known as the root. The five practices and the ten that are not abandoned, accepting and accomplishing them as well, should be known as the common five knowables. Know them at the appropriate time. The common vows are infinite, briefly summarized as the two benefits of self and others, which should be known in the categories. The method of protection is as follows: one's own body is the great mudra of the victorious ones, and the realm of sentient beings should also be known as such, the wisdom body of non-duality of appearance and emptiness. For all that is done, seen, and eaten, for the sake of the mind, nothing is done or appears. Mindfulness and awareness are sent forth in advance. If one does not continuously remember in the three times, how can one enter the Great Vehicle mantra? The connection between view, conduct, and vows, the common and the guidance, and the power of the vows, degeneration, restoration, and the liberation of the knowing continuum. The masters of the oral teachings and scriptures, like a king who has power over the body, and I, like a mother, father, and eyes, should be regarded with more than heart, and with the three doors without deceit or pretense, continuously contemplate the yidam deity. The order of protection should be known as it is explained. For the self-awareness of infinite sentient beings, nothing exists apart from myself.

I, because of the Sugata-garbha, am the nature of the future Buddha. Common spiritual friends are like paternal relatives; the long-abiding of the Buddhadharma, and the similarity of view and conduct, are said to be closeness. Those who share the same samaya, their inner circle of relatives, should be regarded and protected even more than siblings. One should please them with food and wealth, like a honeycomb without any lack. One should willingly take on tasks such as carrying cushions and burdens, like a servant. The retinue of the lama should be treated in the same way. In order to avoid the karmic consequences of taking possessions, one should not defile even a sesame seed's worth. One should not step over bedding, clothing, or brooms. It is said to be like destroying a stupa. Beating, killing, stealing, robbing, and fighting—what need is there to mention doing them directly? Even in jest, one should not do them. One should proclaim the virtues of others and conceal their faults. By proclaiming the faults of others, one will decline. One should not even allude to those who fabricate facts, even in jest. In one's mind, one should abandon deceit, jealousy, malice, slander, and greed. One should not do these things even in a remote place. One should be extremely loving and compassionate, and one should always try to please them with one's conduct, never contradicting their instructions. This is not said to be something that is allowed to be reversed. With the root generation and activity mantras, the samaya activity and dharma, the two kayas and the four great mudras, one should manifestly unite one's own three doors with the body, speech, and mind of the yidam, and constantly recite. This is entering the path of enlightenment. The best is to recite like a river, or three times during the day and three times during the night, two times or one time, without distraction. The middling is to recite six times a month, without interruption between the four times. The lowest yogi who practices should diligently practice every month or every half month. If one does not practice diligently, one will lose the seed of enlightenment. The tsok and torma are the same; at least one should not interrupt them for a year or a month. Profound view and coarse conduct, as well as the form of the deity and the signs of accomplishment, in general, there are said to be four ways to keep secret. The place, time, friend, and substances of practice should be kept extremely secret and practiced. In short, what should be kept secret are: new food, torma, tsok, etc., bhaṇḍa (container), phurba, lamp, substances, la ga, cha, mandala, etc., should not be seen by the public. The sounds of bells, small drums, etc., should not be heard by the public. The conduct of friends
