Thus it is said. It is also said in the Twenty Verses on the Great Vehicle: The nature of things is considered to be like an illusion. Thus it is said. It is also said in the Precious Garland: What is secret to individuals, whatever it is, is the profound Dharma. The world is like an illusion, the Buddha's teachings are nectar. Just as in an illusory elephant, birth and death appear, but in reality, there is no birth and death. Similarly, in the illusory world, birth and death appear, but in the ultimate sense, there is no birth and no death. Just as an illusory elephant does not come from anywhere and does not go anywhere, it is merely a delusion of the mind, therefore it does not truly exist. Similarly, the illusory world does not come from anywhere and does not go anywhere, it is merely a delusion of the mind, therefore it does not truly exist. Thus it is said. Thus, the aggregates, elements, and sources are all of the nature of illusion. A person who contemplates the yoga of illusion will be free from afflictions, karma, and suffering, and will gradually develop the wisdom of knowing the nature of illusion as emptiness. Therefore, if all phenomena are contemplated as being like illusions, then one will attain the wisdom that is like an illusion. Therefore, by means of the illusory body, speech, and mind, one turns away from the illusory afflictions, karma, and suffering. If one engages in the two accumulations that are like illusions, then this is the true path that liberates one from the illusion of samsara. Thus, one should engage by relying on eight or twelve examples of illusion. For the sake of children, individuals with little wisdom, who do not go astray on the path, and for those who do not understand the nature of the path, this treatise has been composed by relying on the lama, the sutras, and the tantras. May all beings quickly attain the three bodies through the merit of composing this Great Vehicle Essence Lamp Treatise. The Great Vehicle Essence Lamp Treatise, composed by the teacher Nagpopa, is complete. It was translated, edited, and finalized by the Indian abbot Kṛṣṇāva and the translator, the monk Chokyi Sherab.
