The Lamp for Compendium of the Great Vehicle, Black. The Lamp for Compendium of the Great Vehicle. Black. In Sanskrit: Mahāyāna Melapana Pradīpam. In Tibetan: The Lamp for Compendium of the Great Vehicle. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Abandoning all stains of faults, seeing the profound nature of reality like an ocean. Abiding with compassion until the end of samsara, performing the benefit of others. Homage to the Powerful Sage and all his sons. This Lamp for Compendium of the Great Vehicle is compiled from all the essential points of sutras and tantras. I will clearly explain it for the sake of sentient beings who are under the influence of ignorance. Now, how should a son or daughter of good family, who possesses the qualities and fortune, enter the teachings of the Buddha? They should gradually train to enter the teachings of the Buddha, not all at once. Thus, the Bhagavan also spoke in the Lankavatara Sutra. The Bodhisattva Mahasattva Mahamati asked the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, does one's own mind become pure gradually or all at once? The Bhagavan replied: Mahamati, one's own mind is purified by entering gradually, not all at once. Mahamati, for example, the fruit of the mango tree ripens gradually, not all at once. Mahamati, likewise, the minds of sentient beings are also purified gradually, not all at once. Mahamati, for example, the clay pots of a potter are made gradually, not all at once. Mahamati, likewise, the Tathagata also gradually tames the minds of sentient beings, not all at once. Mahamati, for example, from the great earth, roots, trees, medicinal herbs, and forests grow gradually, not all at once. Likewise, Mahamati, the Tathagata also gradually trains the minds of sentient beings, not all at once. Mahamati, for example, laughter, musical instruments, songs, lutes, cymbals, and expertise in musical instruments arise gradually, not all at once. Likewise, Mahamati, that

The Tathagata also gradually purifies the minds of sentient beings, not all at once. These two sequences are mentioned in the Sutra of the Earth Store: "Where there is the vehicle of higher realms, there is no vehicle of the Hearers; where there is the vehicle of the Hearers, there is no vehicle of the Solitary Realizers; where there is the vehicle of the Solitary Realizers, there is no Great Vehicle." So it is said. For sentient beings who are initially involved in karma, entering the excellent Dharma, this method is taught by the perfect Buddha as being like the steps of a ladder. Therefore, one should gradually train in the teachings of the Buddha. Therefore, a son or daughter of good family who has obtained a body endowed with leisure and opportunity, and who possesses good lineage and fortune, should first take refuge in the Three Jewels. Possessing faith, a sense of shame, and conscientiousness, one should abandon killing, taking what is not given, sexual misconduct, lying, slander, idle talk, harsh speech, covetousness, malice, wrong view, and nihilistic views, and abide in mindfulness, awareness, and vigilance. In the Garland of Jewels it says: "Killing leads to a short life, various forms of harm bring many dangers, stealing leads to poverty of resources, engaging in sexual misconduct leads to association with enemies, speaking falsely leads to slander, slander leads to the separation of friends, harsh speech leads to hearing unpleasant sounds, irrelevant speech is not dignified, covetousness destroys hope in the mind, malice is said to bestow fear, wrong view is itself a bad view, drinking alcohol confuses the mind, taking what is not given leads to poverty, living by wrong livelihood is deceitful, arrogance leads to low birth, jealousy leads to small dignity, anger leads to an ugly complexion, not asking the wise leads to foolishness. For the person himself, these are the results. First of all, falling into the lower realms. These are called non-virtuous actions, and whatever their ripening results may be, for all virtuous actions, the results are the opposite. Attachment, hatred, and ignorance, and the actions produced by them, are non-virtuous. Without attachment, hatred, and ignorance, the actions produced by them are virtuous. All suffering comes from non-virtuous actions, and so do all the lower realms. All happy realms and happiness in all lifetimes come from virtuous actions."
