In Indian language: Dhyānottarapaṭalaṭīkā. In Tibetan: Extensive Explanation of the Subsequent Stages of Meditation. Volume 1. Homage to the yogi of the glorious Vajrasattva Mahayoga! I pay homage to the object of meditation, the assembly of all vidyā-mantras, the supreme Victorious One, Vairochana, who possesses the three wisdoms. With the methods definitely taught by the scriptures and the gurus, I will briefly explain the subsequent stages of meditation. Here, the twelve meanings explained in this sequence are as follows: The recitation of vidyā-mantras and secret mantras, the nature of meditation and yoga, and the greatness of the very nature of the great means of vidyā-mantras and secret mantras, this is the first meaning, for the sake of encouraging students to diligently engage in it. It should be understood that it is taught by three verses beginning with "Then, the complete wisdom." The meaning of thoroughly distinguishing the objects of the great means of vidyā-mantras and secret mantras themselves, and promising to explain all aspects, is the second meaning, in order to dispel the doubt that it may not be fully explained when determining each object separately. It should be understood that it is taught by one verse beginning with "By which rituals, in which actions of meditation does it abide?" The third meaning is to show the necessity of diligently engaging in it, in order to avert the doubt that it is fruitless. It should be understood that it is taught by three verses beginning with "Called secret mantra meditation." The nature of the great means of vidyā-mantras and secret mantras themselves is the fourth meaning, in order to become skilled in it. It should be understood from the verse beginning with "In that place of the deity's body" up to the end of "From the ritual of the ten limbs." Similarly, due to the power of the arousal of the predispositions of past actions, or due to the fault of not abandoning what is unfavorable, one will turn to other secret mantras. This is the fifth meaning, in order to know them and completely abandon them. Disbelief and laziness, hunger and thirst, and suppression, likewise.

Similarly, at the time of manifestation, the meaning of showing the benefit of clinging to the nature of striving for virtues such as recitation is the ninth, that is, it is shown by three verses beginning with "When the state of manifestation is attained." Then, in order to show the object of clinging to the nature as described above, it is the tenth, that is, it is shown by one verse beginning with "Joyful and endowed with strength." Similarly, in order to show the qualities of the practitioner that arise from the cause of the state of being close to the secret mantra, that is, from the habituation of recitation and meditation, etc., it is the eleventh, that is, it should be understood as being shown by four verses beginning with "Place and food and cold." Similarly, in order to distinguish and show the benefits and fruits of being close to the secret mantra and the accomplishment of the secret mantra, it is the twelfth, that is, it is shown by three verses beginning with "When does one become close," and it should be known that all of these are the condensed meaning. Now is the time to distinguish the branches of the meaning of each of these things and examine them. Among them, the nature of recitation, meditation, and yoga, that should be known.
