Commentary on the Verses on the Reality Showing That All Dharmas Are Not Permanently Abiding Commentary on the Verses on the Reality Showing That All Dharmas Are Not Permanently Abiding Homage to the Buddha! The elephant of wisdom born from causes, the lion that destroys is my treatise. As it is said, the order and the moon, the definitive and the non-definitive meaning. What is it? The nature of dharmas, the means of accomplishing it, and the perfect attainment of it. Among them, the treatises of the Yogacara school, the ultimate truth of dharmas arising from other causes, established by scripture and reasoning, the basis and support of all dharmas, whether appearing or not appearing in nature, the non-dual wisdom, emptiness through investigation, constancy, the Middle Way free from the four extremes. Only this much exists perfectly, and the means of accomplishment and the result are also said to be the same. It is like an elephant. Why? Because the treatises of the proponents of external reality, the Tirthikas, Sravakas, and Sutrantikas, are mostly able to be destroyed by the greatness of scripture and reasoning, and because consciousness is the body of the dharmas of Buddhahood, it is praised because it is not unwanted. However, when looking at the objects of knowledge within, it is also like an elephant because it can be destroyed. What destroys it? It is destroyed because the fangs of scripture and reasoning of the Madhyamaka, which says that all dharmas are not permanent, are extremely frightening like a lion. What is the scripture? Here in the sutra, Manjushri, you say this: Are all these five means of examining dharmas true? Or are some true and some not true? As it is said, all these five means of examining dharmas are also held to be true, and some teach the dharma that all dharmas exist as they appear. It is also thought. Why? Because the four elements and their creations exist like illusions in name. Some also say that all dharmas are only mind, and there is no other dharma besides that. It is also thought. Why? Because the habits of clinging to the various dharmas as permanent and solid.

Through the power of abiding in the mind, although at all times, I and all phenomena appear as distinct, in terms of ultimate truth, there is no inherent existence, as it is only mind. Some may think that they are teaching us the Dharma, saying that the nature of mind is also unborn. Why is that? Because this (nature of mind) has no shape, no color, no three times, and no beginning or end. Some may think that they are teaching us the Dharma, saying that all phenomena appear like illusions and are not established like illusions. Why is that? Because all phenomena arise and originate from causes and conditions. Some may think that they are teaching us the Dharma, saying that all phenomena are unborn by nature, do not abide by nature, are free from all edges of actions and activities, transcend the realm of conceptualization and non-conceptualization, and are pure of elaboration from beginningless time. Why is that? Because all phenomena are their own undeluded nature. Thus it is said. There is no need to enumerate further. What is the reasoning? It is said that all phenomena that are claimed to exist, which the great beings have previously well established, arise only from dependent origination, and are therefore like illusions. He (Nagarjuna) also taught that, in terms of ultimate truth, it is never reasonable for the earth to arise from itself, from others, from both, or from no cause. Therefore, in terms of ultimate truth, it is like a lotus in the sky. This alone is sufficient. Those with the eye of wisdom, if they honestly and carefully examine this reasoning of inherent existence, will ultimately find nothing established. Therefore, all phenomena are not established as truly existent. The reasoning of non-establishment and so on is also not the case, there is no need to say much. He (Nagarjuna) will also completely destroy all inverted doctrines. Here there is a verse: If you want to arise from a causeless self, then the Samkhyas say that permanence is the cause; if you want to arise from other causes, then the Vaisheshikas say that action is the cause; if you want to arise from both, then the naked ascetics say that Ishvara is the cause; if you want to arise from the unborn, then the Lokayatas say that nature is the cause; if you want to turn the born into emptiness, then the mind of space is the path of annihilation; if you do not accept any (of the above views), then it is an evil, deceitful, and ignorant view, self-
