Abridged Exposition on Abiding, by Sahajasrivajra Abridged Exposition on Abiding By Sahajasrivajra In the language of India: Sthiti Samuccaya. In the language of Tibet: Abridged Exposition on Abiding. Homage to the Bhagavan, glorious Manjuvajra! I shall explain the essential points concerning the absence of self in phenomena and beings, which are the Vajra Distinct Utterances, clarifying the stages of the Middle Way. Some say there is such a thing as a 'being,' asserting it is neither permanent nor impermanent. Space and the two cessations, these three unconditioned things are permanent. All conditioned things are impermanent; sentient beings are of the nature of the five aggregates. Existence is the truth of suffering; know that to be the result. The cause is the truth of origination; it is of the nature of actions and afflictions. These two truths are tainted; the latter two are untainted. When actions and afflictions are completely exhausted, and one has attained utter cessation, the noble liberation is directly realized; peace is the exhaustion of suffering. The noble eightfold path is supreme, for through familiarity, it certainly brings forth wisdom. 'Right view,' and so forth, the eightfold path was taught by the capable one. That is the nirvana of the Hearers. The meditation of the Solitary Buddhas, too, without relying on prophecies, through their own previous aspirations, having realized the meaning, they pass into nirvana. With a body that remains, those great beings are capable of benefiting themselves and others in every way, relying on their own wishes, they pass into nirvana like a lamp. This is the middling Buddha; this is the abiding of the Distinct Utterers. The aggregates, elements, and sense bases, all conditioned things are momentary. Those things, being without self, are made the object of correct knowledge. The knowledge of the noble ones is of two kinds: direct perception and inference. With respect to the characteristics of objects, direct perception is obscured. Objects and time are ephemeral, infinitesimal particles and moments. Because they are capable of performing the function of meaning, they are truly ultimate entities. Let alone space and so forth, by desiring all the functions of activity, having made them the object of valid cognition, they are thoroughly examined here. Thus, forms such as pots always perform the function of meaning; in each of their moments, they perform their own entity. Having performed one function, they do not perform it again.

One should not apply to make attachments, for if one does, it will change. The previous nature, at all times, does not follow other moments. Because the stream of moments is similar, manifest consciousness and so forth each abide separately. Now, the meaning that has become manifest, likewise, is also completely cut off. This is the discriminating cutting off, it is the cultivation arising from the manifest. After the appearance has completely deteriorated, it is not placing another continuum, the arising of another is because of fear, the cause of self-awareness will deteriorate. From the aggregation of minute particles, what is seen as a coarse form, such as the body, trees, and earth, the coarse are not even slightly the same. Likewise, happiness and suffering, pots and so forth are also each different. By one moving and being red, all move and become red. By one becoming moving, the entire body becomes pervaded by movement, it is likewise. However, if it is said that by the movement of parts and so forth, it is not so for the possessor of limbs, if the possessor of limbs does not move, how will other realms be obtained? By the aggregation of minute particles, whatever moment the appearance of the external world is, the self-aspect of consciousness, by arising, obtains the object itself. By the sphere of activity of just that, omniscience is not obtained, because it depends on one assembly, the cause becomes the same as the sense faculty. By analyzing half and not half, there is no point in the arising of the distinction of consciousness. By analyzing substance and non-substance, there is no arising from all. The four noble truths of the noble ones, are also cultivated here by those with intelligence. Perfect complete Bodhicitta, if the accumulation is not complete, it does not exist. One should not make it manifest, if one makes it manifest, it will become Hinayana. By becoming accustomed to the profound stages, the root of Bodhi is compassion. The root of compassion is well-combined, the Vaibhashikas are also the same, by becoming accustomed to the stages of Mahayana, why would one not become perfect Bodhi? Otherwise, how is the wisdom realized by the Sutrantikas Mahayana? Because it is separated from Madhyamaka, there is also no Buddha in that. Just by the difference of abiding, there is no certainty of vehicle, only wisdom is seen by the Arhat and the Madhyamikas as well. After combining Mahayana compassion, paths such as generosity become even more superior. Truths such as suffering, the distinction of abiding
