A Difficult Commentary on the Tantra of Glorious Vajrabhairava, by Akshobhya. A Difficult Commentary on the Tantra of Glorious Vajrabhairava. By Akshobhya. First Branch: Expressly Stating the Order of the Number of Chapters. In Sanskrit: Śrīvajrabhairavatantratīkā. In Tibetan: A Difficult Commentary on the Tantra of Glorious Vajrabhairava. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! Having bowed with devotion to the feet of the Guru, in this contemplation of the glorious Yama's Foe, in order to remember myself, I shall write down only the difficult points. Those supreme Gurus whom one cannot please well with difficulty over a long period of time, are like a poor person who recognizes a great treasure but abandons it completely, exhausted by the work of digging. Likewise, to those who are like the poor, with evil minds that harm themselves, the collection of teachings, like the essence of butter that comes from good churning, will not be poured out again. Just as the parts of the moon gradually increase with the accumulation of days, reaching the ultimate of fifteen, from sixteen onwards, it diminishes and does not increase, like the manifest knowledge of the wise beings. During a long period of service, the vessel for it is gradually prepared by the Guru. If one serves steadfastly at first, but the Guru does not bless one in time, it deteriorates. Therefore, with a joyful heart, in order to give a little essence from this contemplation, I shall write this highly condensed treatise for those disciples who are of inferior intelligence but respectful. This contemplation, which begins with "Then," etc., and is divided into seven chapters, is the order of the chapters, and the condensed meaning, and the explanation of the places of the oral instructions, which are explained in three parts. That is to say, like this, recitation and, accomplishment and, various activities, etc., are to be done by the mantra practitioner of empowerment. And the mantra practitioner of the first action is mostly empowered in the mandala of colored powders, therefore, first, by the side of the words, the empowerment is indicated, and the chapter of the mandala is spoken. The mantra practitioner of empowerment performs recitation by meditating or reciting, therefore, then the fourth chapter is spoken, which is reasonable. Meditation should also rely on the object of the drawing, therefore, then the fifth chapter is spoken. Thereafter, the Bhagavan Great Vairocana Vajra Tathagata, by the power of great wisdom,

Having entered the Samadhi called "Vajra Transforming the Earth," he spoke thus to Vajrapani: "Vajrapani, if an image is made on cloth or a wall, etc., what will cause the wisdom of the mantra holders to be perfected, and if wisdom is perfected, Buddhahood will be easily attained? What need is there to mention other accomplishments? I shall explain the great secret of the Samadhi of all the collections of mantras, listen!" So forth. Thus, obtaining the object of focus by relying on images will enable one to perform the actions of Samadhi. Therefore, the seventh chapter on the combination of actions based on meditation is taught. If one has done the approach of recitation, but has not attained Samadhi, it is possible, so for the sake of those, the fire offering activity arising from recitation is taught. If one is not pleased with the fire offering activity, or does not find a gathering, then the second chapter on the activity of the wheel is taught. If the mantra practitioner who has practiced does not like those minor activities, but desires supreme accomplishment, then again the first chapter on supreme accomplishment is taught. Thus, what is needed in all approach, practice, and various activities is mantra, but that mantra, if impure, will not accomplish accomplishment. Rituals are impaired and the hooks and vowels of the letters are diminished, there are no offerings and impure recitations are done, mantras with excessive hooks, vowels, and letters do not give great accomplishments. Thus it is said, therefore, the third chapter on extracting letters to purify the mantra is taught. This is the order of the seven chapters, connected with the earth, spoken by oral instruction. Furthermore, for the sake of the supreme practitioner, the first chapter on accomplishing supreme accomplishment is taught. If supreme accomplishment is accomplished by this, then one can enter into subtle activities, and it is said in this that even if the mantra practitioner has not become accomplished, all subtle activities will surely be accomplished. Therefore, the second chapter is taught. The activity of the second chapter also depends on the purity of the mantra, therefore, the third chapter on the purity of the mantra is taught. That pure mantra should also be recited in conjunction with meditation, therefore, the fourth chapter on meditation is taught.
