Chapter Five: Abridged Doubt Severance Differentiating the Limits of Karma. Chapter Five: Abridged Doubt Severance Differentiating the Limits of Karma. The vajra student's prayer and so on, is to want to understand the meaning of all mind and mental events. The various consciousnesses are synonymous with "all consciousnesses." The nature of the three consciousnesses appearing as formless means that the three consciousnesses are unshowable and unimpeded. If one thinks that wind has form, then "the element of wind is also formless," because wind also has color, shape, and is identifiable. If one thinks that karma has form, then "karma is also formless," referring to the fact that virtuous and non-virtuous karma have no form. Whatever is formless has no cognition. Whatever has no cognition is unshowable and unimpeded. There is no mutual knowing because they are not different entities. "From the words of the scriptures, emptiness is proclaimed," meaning that the scriptures also explain the absence of inherent existence. The rest is easy to understand. Among them, "only at first" means at the very beginning. Virtue and non-virtue refer to abandoning and engaging, up to taking what is not given and lustful gazing. Its own characteristic means that its own nature should be established as such. The detailed explanation is that the ten virtues are abandoning the ten non-virtues generated by afflictions. The opposite of that is not abandoning, which is a synonym for accepting. Where do these arise from? "They arise from body, speech, and mind," like taking what is not given arising from the body, which will be explained below. Then where does it arise from? Because it arises from the body. The Bhagavan and others said, among which "the misdeeds of the body are three," namely taking what is not given, killing, and unchaste conduct. "The misdeeds of speech are four," namely idle talk, harsh speech, divisive speech, and lying. "The three of mind" are covetousness, malice, and wrong view. Then, why are they called non-virtuous?
