Commentary on the Unborn Nature of One's Own Mind, and So Forth. Commentary on the Unborn Nature of One's Own Mind, and So Forth. Having refuted all views in this way, now, regarding the meaning of the Madhyamaka view, which is established in the great Bodhicitta, namely, that one's own mind is originally unborn, being the nature of emptiness, the explanation is as follows: First, briefly showing the nature of Madhyamaka Bodhi, which is "without characteristics, unborn." From "without characteristics," it refers to one's own characteristics, such as color, and so forth. Or, it refers to the characteristics of conditioned phenomena, such as birth, and so forth. Precisely because of that, it is said to be "unborn," because it is neither existent nor non-existent. For example, all phenomena that exist cannot be born, because they have already been born. Non-existence is like a turtle's egg. Saying "not uttering words" means that the letters of the names that utter words do not occur simultaneously, so in ultimate truth there are no words, just as they appeared before. Non-conditioned means that the nature of conditioned phenomena is not created simultaneously, nor is it accomplished gradually. For example, when there is the time of birth, if there is no abiding at that time, then what will be born? Because it does not abide. Even if it is not born simultaneously, there is no abiding. So how is it? "Space and," that is it. "Space and" is said like this. Bodhicitta is non-conceptual wisdom. Bodhi is the direct realization of all phenomena without inversion. The nature of non-duality is that space and Bodhicitta are not separate, they are non-different. For example, just as space exists in name but does not exist in ultimate truth, so too, Bodhicitta exists in valid conventional truth but does not exist in ultimate truth. That meaning is: "Emptiness-wisdom is like space." Because it is both emptiness and wisdom, emptiness-wisdom has no essence. That is like space, existing in name but non-existent when examined. That meaning is related to "Buddha knows." What kind of Buddha? One who makes the three times the dwelling place, enlightened in the three times. And what is that like? Realizing all the essence of Bodhi. Because it possesses the wisdom of knowing all things. The great self is the great emptiness.
