Chapter Four: The Chapter on Abiding, Showing the First Abiding Chapter Four: The Chapter on Abiding, Showing the First Abiding Without subduing the demon of afflictions, it is impossible to avert demons such as gods. Just as one would abandon wood when not desiring fire, one should strive to avert the demon of afflictions. Abiding has three aspects, by abiding well, all faults are thoroughly destroyed. As the Powerful Sage himself said in the tantras, listen with great respect as it is thoroughly explained. When desire is strong, avert it with the impure flesh and fat, skin and bones. The body is impure, skin, flesh, blood, sinews, brain, fat, intestines, spleen, liver, kidneys, blood, bile, phlegm, pus, feces, urine, hair, nails, orifices, and bones, eyes, ears, nose, and mouth, anus, genitals, and the nine openings, from wounds flow various impure stains, this is a constant occurrence. Thus, all the limbs are assembled, and endowed with earth, water, fire, wind, and space. The human body follows the course of karma, abiding in a body that possesses everything. Even when tormented by desire, for all these limbs of the body, having brought forth single-pointed mindfulness, examine them individually with the eye of wisdom. Thus, when one examines with certainty, and with attachment to body and life, desire is pacified from its root, just as the sun completely dispels darkness. Separated from seeking and friends, encountering the unpleasant, tormented by desire, suffering from sickness, birth, old age, and death, even if one goes to all places, one cannot escape these. Blood, mosquitoes, heat, cold, hunger, and thirst, wherever one goes, there is only suffering, therefore, when a mind of delight in objects arises, one should avert those thoughts. The mind is like lightning, a monkey, and clouds, similarly, it is like the waves of a great ocean. Because it delights in objects as a cause for going astray, it must be tamed with unwavering diligence. Therefore, the Bhagavan, the Powerful Conqueror, said that the root of all these dharmas is the mind. By taming the mind, one will obtain the happiness of gods and humans, as well as ascension and liberation. The faults of the mind lead to the realm of animals, and the hell realms.
