The Explanation of the Mind of Enlightenment, by Nagarjuna. The Explanation of the Mind of Enlightenment. Nagarjuna. In Sanskrit: Bodhicittavivarana Nama. In Tibetan: The Explanation of the Mind of Enlightenment. Homage to glorious Vajrasattva! Being apart from all things, of aggregates, elements, and sense bases, having completely abandoned the grasped and the grasper, since phenomena are selfless and of equal nature, one's own mind is primordially unborn, it is the nature of emptiness. Thus it arises. Just as the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, and the great Bodhisattvas generated the great mind of enlightenment, so too, from this time forth until reaching the essence of enlightenment, I shall generate the great mind of enlightenment in order to liberate those sentient beings who have not been liberated, to free those who have not been freed, to give breath to those who have not breathed, and to lead to complete nirvana those who have not completely passed into nirvana. Bodhisattvas who practice the path of secret mantra, having thus generated the mind of enlightenment with the nature of aspiration in the aspect of conventional truth, should generate it by the power of meditating on the mind of ultimate enlightenment, therefore, its nature shall be explained. The very nature of the mind of enlightenment, paying homage to the glorious Vajra beings, the meditation on the mind of enlightenment, I shall explain to the world of beings. The mind of enlightenment of the Buddhas, not obscured by the discriminations of self and aggregates, etc., of the discriminating consciousness, constantly abides in the nature of emptiness. With a mind moistened by compassion, one should strive to meditate. This mind of enlightenment of the Buddha, the nature of compassion, should be constantly meditated upon. Whatever is conceived by the non-Buddhists, that self, when analyzed well with reason, within all the aggregates, wherever it may abide, is not found. Although the aggregates exist, they are not permanent, and that is not the nature of self. Neither the permanent nor the impermanent, there is no essence of support and supported. If it is said that the self exists, how can the agent be permanent? If there is a nature of phenomena, then in all phenomena, actions in the world can be established. Why is it that the permanent does not accomplish anything, neither sequentially nor simultaneously, that

Outwardly, in the external, there is no such thing as a permanent object. If it were possible, why not look? It would produce objects all at once. Whatever depends on other objects is not permanent and capable. If it is an object, it is not permanent, because all objects are always momentary. Therefore, there is no prevention of the agent itself on impermanent objects. This world without self, etc., aggregates, elements, and sources, is destroyed by the mind of grasping and holding. Those who desire benefit, the five aggregates of form, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness, are thus spoken to the hearers. The best of the two-legged ones also always said that form appears like a mass of foam, feeling is like a bubble of water, perception is like a mirage, formation is like a plantain tree, and consciousness is like an illusion. Such a teaching of aggregates is spoken to the Bodhisattvas. The nature of the four great elements is well explained in the aggregate of form. The remaining formless, if it does not exist, it does not arise, therefore it is established. The eye, form, etc. of those, the elements that are spoken of are those themselves. The sources should be known as the grasped and the grasper. Form dust is not the cause of root consciousness, it is beyond the senses. If the aggregate produces them, then the collection is also not desired. By separating by the division of directions, differences are also seen in the atoms. On what is analyzed by parts, how is the atom reasonable there? External objects will have different consciousnesses arise on one aspect. What is the pleasing form? That itself becomes different to others. On the form of one woman alone, on taste and desire, on food, like dogs with attachment, there are three kinds of discrimination. Is not acting with the same meaning like harm in a dream? There is no difference in acting when waking from a dream. By the nature of the grasped and the grasper, whatever the appearance of consciousness is, other than consciousness, there are no external objects. Therefore, in the nature of things, there is no aspect of external objects anywhere. This separately appearing consciousness will appear as the aspect of form. Just as beings are deluded in mind, like illusions, mirages, and dry eaters.
