The Ritual of Particularly Abiding The Ritual of Particularly Abiding ༄། །For those who are suitable to draw mandalas, here is the explanation of the land of directions: Which deity, as well as gardens and villages, towns and trading seasons, starting from the east, up to the north, etc., all seven directions should be abandoned. If a mandala is drawn in the east, the bearable will become unbearable. If a mandala is drawn in the south where rain falls, beings will die and various kinds of approaching harm will occur, and the disciple will also die. This is the reason of the scriptures, not found elsewhere. If in the west, the teacher will pass away. If entering in the north, similarly in the direction of fire, heavy rain will fall. In the southwest, a great famine will occur. If drawn in the west, it will cause wind and rain, and one will also die at the base of a stupa. Whatever water is blessed by the nagas, the shade of trees with intertwined roots, therefore, the powerful and supreme one, the land of his dwelling place, should know the colors in order. Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras are the four castes. Brahmins should be known as white, yellow is considered the caste of kings, Vaishyas should be known as red, and black is generally considered the caste of Shudras. In the direction of white land, there, the seat is a common dumping ground, a staff and rosary are constant, and wisdom and intelligence will be accomplished. Possessing measure and being oily, abandoning the faults of high and low, leaning towards the east and north, delightful, is a part of the land, the land should be purified. Skull, roots, bones, hair, chaff, stones, gravel, and ashes, coal, worms, dig to the amount of one 'khru do' (a unit of measurement), and if there are, sentient beings ༄། །then great wind will arise. If there are bones, then stinging pain will arise. If there is gravel, then one will become mute. If there is chaff and coal, then there will be plague. If there are hair and roots, trees, etc., then subtle harm will occur. Therefore, those who desire auspiciousness should strive to purify the part of the land. The 'khru' of the mandala is considered to be eight. Others, for a king, it is eight 'khru', for those on the border, it is half of that, for the main ones, it is said to be half of that, for merchants, it is twelve 'khru', and for practitioners, it is six 'khru'.

This is the sequence of wheels that is spoken of. According to the meaning of the scriptures as they are spoken, I will write according to my ability. First of all, may the wise ones descend upon the desired ground. The teacher, having first performed the yoga of his own deity, should dispel the hosts of obstacles with the root mantra. Then, the ground on which the mandala is to be made should be dug to a depth that reaches the knees, and all faults such as bones should be removed. Fill it with the same earth and tamp it down. In the center of it, make a hole that is as deep and wide as a furrow, fill it with water, and recite the root mantra. Walk a hundred steps to the east and return. If the water has not dried up, it will be auspicious. Then, in the center of it, make a wrathful fire pit, and perform a wrathful fire offering with bone ash, poison, blood, skull, and so on. Then, in the same place, make a peaceful fire pit, and perform a peaceful fire offering for the sake of the lord of that land. Then, the part of the ground where the mandala is to be made should be raised and tamped down with other earth as well. Then, on the outside of it, build a mandala house, decorated with a square shape, four doors, four stables, and so on. There, display statues, thangkas, scriptures, banners, garlands of flowers, fragrances, incense, butter lamps, fire, wood, and flowers such as jasmine, champak, white lotus, red lotus, dragon brain incense, saffron, jasmine, jasmine, red rose, lotus, blue lotus, oleander, and so on, and spread out various clothes as decorations.
