The Differentiation of the Four Stages, by Krishnacharya. The Differentiation of the Four Stages, by Krishnacharya. First, showing the explanation of the stages of the tantra. ༄. In the language of India: Olatsastustaya Vibhangga Nama. In Tibetan: Called "The Differentiation of the Four Stages." ༄. Homage with reverence to the Bhagavan Dakas and Dakinis! By whom the solar mandala, and the four maras are completely suppressed. Having paid homage to that which was done, I will clearly explain the four stages. The so-called "E-vam-maya," etc. Here, "E-vam-maya" is, for the time being, to gather this uncommon vehicle, is Vajrapani. And that, in the language of intention, E and Vam are not words of gathering, but the dwelling place of Vajradhara is indicated by symbols. That is also for the sake of beautiful words, good, definite words, love of composition, and to fully ripen the deities, the main objects of method and wisdom to be spoken are indicated by two letters. That itself is without dependence on words, and abandoning elaboration, then the secret will be explained. It is said that other than the words of the two letters, it is spoken in this tantra and that tantra. Therefore, Vajradhara himself, considering the person to be spoken to, in some tantras such as Hevajra, it is explained by two letters. That is also that things are gathered by water, wind, and sky, which are born from the father, that is Vam. The earth element, the fire element, and the wisdom element are born from the mother, that is E. Therefore, it is E-vam. Therefore, to show that it is not a word of gathering. E is the karma mudra, Vam is the dharma mudra, Ma is the maha mudra, Ya is the samaya mudra, thus it is said. Among them, E is because it is sharp, or because it is located in the lower part, or because it is located in the form of bhaga (藏文:བྷ་ག་,梵文天城体:भग,梵文罗马拟音:bhaga,汉语字面意思:女阴), or because it is located in the triangle, or because it is empty like the sky, or because it is the nature of cutting and piercing, or because it is the nature of desire, therefore it is said so. That is also as it is said in the five hundred thousand Hevajra.

། ། ༄། །The wisdom one, the form of E (Tibetan: ཨེ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: ए, Sanskrit Romanization: e, Chinese literal meaning: Ai), contemplate in the realm of the wise sky. །Thus it is said. Moreover, in that same tantra it says: For sharpness, in the form of fire, that is also regarded as the mothers. In the nature of the first vowel, it is highly praised by the Buddhas. །Thus it is said. The term "karma" is for the sake of performing the karma of body, speech, and mind that brings happiness. The term "རྒྱ་" (Tibetan:, Sanskrit Devanagari:, Sanskrit Romanization:, Chinese literal meaning:) is so called because it is symbolized by that. Furthermore, Vaṃ (Tibetan: ཝཾ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: वं, Sanskrit Romanization: vaṃ, Chinese literal meaning: Wang) is either similar to the letter that speaks of Dharma, or it speaks of the meaning of white, or it is white water, or it washes away all defilements, or it holds the characteristic of great bliss, therefore it is so called. Mā (Tibetan: མཱ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: मा, Sanskrit Romanization: mā, Chinese literal meaning: Ma) is so called because it is all-pervasive and vast, or profound, or expansive, or large, or it is uninterrupted bliss. Yā (Tibetan: ཡཱ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: या, Sanskrit Romanization: yā, Chinese literal meaning: Ya) is so called because it is not to be transgressed, or it abides as it is, or it shows the characteristic of suchness, or it goes as it came, or it abides as it vowed. Furthermore, the four letters are the nature of the four elements, blessed by the goddess Cakṣumatī and others, and they are also the four instants, the four joys, the four powers, and the four bodies, and so on. Furthermore, it is said that the four letters show the meaning of the four mudras. Thus, the four mudras that are shown are to show that there is nothing other than emptiness and compassion. E (Tibetan: ཨེ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: ए, Sanskrit Romanization: e, Chinese literal meaning: Ai) is wisdom, and Vaṃ (Tibetan: ཝཾ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: वं, Sanskrit Romanization: vaṃ, Chinese literal meaning: Wang) is skillful means, thus it is said. Showing the absence of things is wisdom, and showing the characteristic of things is skillful means, which is the nature of three times three, which is six. Therefore, all things are two letters. The emanation wheel, the Dharma wheel, the enjoyment wheel, and the great bliss wheel are said to be the meaning of abiding naturally in the form of the root wheels for embodied beings. The number of petals of those, in order, are sixty-four, ༄། །eight, sixteen, and thirty-two, it should be known. They are to be understood by the divisions of dbyu gu, thun mtshams, 'pho ba, and chu tshod. The colors of those are yellow, black, red, and white.
