Explanation of Chapter One. Explanation of Chapter One. ༄། །In Sanskrit: Śrīsaṃvarodayamahātantrarājasya padminīnāmapañcikā. In Tibetan: A commentary on the difficult points of the Great King of Tantras, the Source of Union, called Lotus. Homage to the glorious Wheel of Bliss! The profound jewels arise without remainder, the sole treasure for the life of beings. The awakened assembly relies truly, hundreds of thousands of wonders abide. The heroic mother truly possesses the body of nectar, the basis of excellence and goodness. The great tantra of the Source of Union is the ocean of milk, relied upon by the wise. By the light of the lamp of the Guru's kindness, dispelling darkness with the eye of wisdom, the meaning of the Source of Union, as much as is seen, will be written here. Even if I have entered into this, I may not be able to truly understand its depths and limits. Nevertheless, desiring to generate the habit of virtue, I compose this explanation. If one cannot fully touch the depths of the river's treasure, will those who enter into the ritual not attain the desired glory? Here, the Bhagavan, desiring to liberate the three realms without remainder, ༄། །Having realized the Bodhi of perfect and complete enlightenment, he truly satisfies beings with the nectar of Dharma according to their capacity. Moreover, for the sake of those beings who, at that time, did not dwell nearby and were to be tamed, he made this collection of the true Dharma. The meaning of "collection" is to gather the Dharma that has been heard, according to the order of separation, into a treatise. Among these, first of all, this treatise was spoken by the sole teacher of all beings, such as gods, demigods, and humans, the supreme and unequaled one, the person who has become a measure, and therefore this treatise was not self-made, but was truly understood by the consciousness of the ear, and therefore it was spoken by the one whose nature has become a measure. Thus, from "Thus I have heard" to "request," the Bhagavan, the collector, has shown the limb of entry for the people who listen. He said: For the limb of entry for the faithful, in order to thoroughly prove oneself as a measure, the teacher, retinue, and witnesses, the place and time are definitely shown. The collector des

also as a basis. Place and time are indicated nearby. Therefore, being called the Lord of Speech, one will further attain pramana. Thus it is said. If, because the specific places and times are not mentioned separately, how are these to be known? It is to be said that it is not the main factor for definitely knowing only those, because even without them, in some cases, merely by the senses, it becomes pramana. Place and time are indicated nearby, which mainly refers to most cases. In the way of the Paramitas, since time is not a substance, only the place is suitable for merit and viewing, etc., thereby definitely indicating it. Here, in order to best guide the beings who should be tamed at what time and where, at that time and place, they are indicated, therefore the place cannot be determined, but only commonly indicated. Or, there are also separately determined places and times. Similarly, the Bhagavan, for those of lesser inclination, closely indicated the Hearer Vehicle; for those inclined towards the profound and those with thoughts free from desire, clearly elucidated the way of the Paramitas; for the vessels of the most profound Dharma, in the auspicious heap of fruit stupa, he erected the mandala of the Lord of Speech of the auspicious Dharmadhatu on the night of the black moon, thereby clarifying all the treatises of the Mantrayana way. Thus it is said. However, here, because the way of ultimate meaning eliminates attachment to external objects, it is not closely indicated. Or, in order to best indicate that which pervades the intermediate ten directions of samsara, abiding in each atom of all dharmas abiding in the boundless realm of space, abiding in the palace of the Vajra Jewel Peak, therefore the certainty of place and time is not mentioned here. Because through these words, etc., the characteristics indicated and the cause of accomplishing actions, as well as all qualities, will be explained. Similarly, such a teacher, in such a place, to such an assembly of retinue, by such a questioner, this Dharma was taught. Therefore, without a doubt,
