Extensive Commentary on the First Chapter Extensive Commentary on the First Chapter Now, beginning with the explanation of the empowerment of the Bodhicitta in the Second Chapter, in order to benefit sentient beings and to explain the ritual of its mandala, "From that" and so on are spoken. "From that" refers to the beginning of all tantras, after the great secret, that is, at the end of explaining it. "To be truly explained" means that the true Dharma should be explained. "To the practitioners" means to the sentient beings who are present now. "For the sake of benefit" means the Dharma of the nature of cause and effect, which is not the same as the Dharma that does not follow other non-Buddhist paths. Therefore, this means "for what reason." Regarding the knowledge of the disciple's empowerment, there are two types of empowerment here: mundane and supramundane. Among them, the mundane is the breath of the Tathagata, which also has ten aspects. The supramundane is the breath of Vajradhara, which is secret, wisdom, prajna, and supreme. Thus, by the breath of the Tathagata, one accumulates merit and becomes a vessel for the holy Dharma. Similarly, by the breath of Vajradhara, one attains Buddhahood by the power of the accumulation of wisdom. Thus, the nature of outer and inner is being explained for the sake of cause and effect. "By what" refers to the ritual of the mandala. The ritual is also, with the word "also," referring to the ritual of empowerment. "Should be explained" means should be narrated. "First, the deity" and so on, refers to after the disciple has requested. Thus, first, the guru and disciple should examine each other well, not relying on themselves, striving to accomplish the benefit of themselves and others, and the guru should show compassion to the disciple who possesses these qualities. Then, when all the necessary items are obtained, the teacher goes to the mandala site, makes offerings with fragrant flowers and so on, and performs purification and scattering. Then, the guru again manifests the yoga of the deity he desires, at which time the son
