Abridged Meaning of the First Chapter Abridged Meaning of the First Chapter First, Explanation of the Chapter on the Vajra Family. In Sanskrit: Śrī Hevajra nāma tantra artha saṃgraha. (Glorious Hevajra Named Tantra, Abridged Meaning). Homage to the glorious Vajrasattva! Perfecting the taste of great wisdom, having paid homage to great bliss, I shall write the meaning of the Hevajra Tantra to the best of my ability. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, generated the mind of enlightenment, accumulated merit through the aspects of enlightenment and the perfections, and beginning with the generation stage, perfected the conventional truth up to the seventh ground. From the eighth to the tenth ground, having purified the three appearances, he attained the ten grounds. Through the stage of union, the ultimate truth was spontaneously accomplished on the ground of Samantabhadra. Descending from Tushita to Jambudvipa, he placed the emanation body of asceticism in the human realm, and through the samadhi body of mind-abiding transformation, he went to Akanishta, attained manifest enlightenment, and manifestly and completely awakened as a Buddha through the means of secret mantra, subduing the gods in the realm of the Great Brahma, the palace of dominion, and on top of Mount Meru, etc. Then, descending to the human realm, he manifestly awakened on the Vajra Throne. Although he taught many methods of taming gods and humans, in short, there are three types: To those who have weak virtues due to bad views and poor conduct, and who seek enlightenment for a long time, he taught the Dharma of detachment from desire by merely realizing the four noble truths and the absence of self in individuals. To some who are arrogant with self-view, pride, and desire, and who have great compassion and wisdom, he taught the eight aggregates of consciousness and the two selflessnesses through immeasurable means, as well as the profound and vast grounds and perfections. To some who are frightened by abandoning asceticism and objects of desire, who are particularly devoted to the profound, who have become vessels of the suchness of Dharma, with great compassion

For those with dull faculties, they manifest as Chakravartin kings and the like, demonstrating behaviors similar to the Dharma of desire, thereby revealing the conduct of secret mantras. For those beings who, due to the power of habituation in other lives, particularly delight in secluded forests, and are unable to calm their minds without engaging in activities such as bathing, drawing mandalas, asceticism, offerings, fire pujas, and recitations; for those whose ability to meditate on Suchness is weak and who particularly enjoy practices with characteristics, the Kriya Tantras, which mainly demonstrate these common practices, such as the Vajraśekhara Tantra, the Supreme Wisdom Tantra, and the Utpatti Tantra, are taught. For those who are also fond of the distinctions of actions, and who are also willing to apply the vast practices of skillful means and wisdom, and who do not abandon the nature of inner self, the Ubhaya Tantras, which are in accordance with both action and yoga, such as the Vajrapāṇi Abhiṣeka Tantra and the Mahāvairocana Abhisambodhi Tantra, are taught. For some disciples who are delighted to offer to Suchness, who are particularly inclined towards yoga, who dislike external rituals, and who wish to purify their minds through samādhi, the Yoga Tantras, which have few aspects of action and mainly demonstrate the aspects of yoga, such as the Śrīparamādya Tantra, the Yoga Tantra Ārya-tathāgatasaṃgraha Tantra, and the Sarvatathāgatatattvasaṃgraha Tantra, are taught. For some disciples who are naturally sharp-witted, who are single-mindedly intent on meditating on Suchness, who have the power of previous habituation, who do not engage in the perception of difference in all things, whose minds have been trained in the Mahāyāna, and who are great beings with great faith in the practice of non-duality of wisdom and skillful means, the Mahāyoga Tantras, which emphasize yoga with Suchness, enter through the principle of non-duality, and have vast practices with elaboration, without elaboration, and without extreme elaboration, and all Buddhas
