Fifth, Explanation of the Chapter on Suchness. Fifth, Explanation of the Chapter on Suchness. Thus, having shown the two divine yogas of abiding in equipoise during meditation sessions and not abiding in equipoise between meditation sessions, the yoga of suchness is to be expressed, for without these three, there is no swift enlightenment. Therefore, it begins with "suchness" and so forth. The chapter that clarifies suchness is the chapter on suchness. Form is blue, yellow, and so on. That which is absent is non-existent. How is it absent? By its very nature. That which, by its nature, is examined and seen, and becomes an object to be grasped, is absent, for it is devoid of the nature of one and many. It is merely a delusion of children. It is not existent, yet it appears in such and such a form, just as in dreams and so on, where there is no form, yet it appears as form. Seeing is also non-existent. Therefore, it is said, "without seeing," that is, the seeing of the eyes and so on, and the seer, both persons, are also absent by their very nature. That which is examined by children, which grasps the nature of things, is absent. Likewise, awareness is also absent, and the toucher is also absent. Thus, the ten sense bases, form, eyes, and so on, and the person who sees, and so on, are also said to be absent. "Without mind" refers to the mind characterized by consciousness. Because it distinguishes, consciousness is the collection of six consciousnesses, from the realm of eye consciousness to the realm of mind consciousness. These themselves, immediately past, are the mind realm. These seven are the realm of consciousness, that is, the mind base. Moreover, the consciousness that is distinguished by the six consciousnesses. Therefore, that is also called the sound of mind. The nature of grasping, both of these are non-existent, for without the nature of what is grasped, there is no grasper. Why? Because what is grasped is inseparable from the nature of one and many. The ten sense bases, whether with parts or without parts, become mere atoms. The coarse

If it is thought that the reason can be established by non-reasoning, then, if the substance of the dharma-āyatana is separate from the perceptual part, then, for those that are established as being of a nature that appears separately, that reason is not established. Therefore, if it is thought that the dharma-āyatana is not non-existent, then, therefore it is said, 'There is nothing that arises from the mind,' meaning the object of the mind, the dharma-āyatana that arises from the mind, that too is non-existent. Because things that are not momentary have already been refuted elsewhere. Momentary things also should not be grasped, because the past and the future do not exist. Things that are happening now have no function, because the characteristic of an object is to have a function. If at that time the twelve āyatanas and the person are also not existent in the manner of two, then in what manner do they exist? They exist as substance in the manner of delusion, possessing the appearance of duality. Therefore, that is precisely dependent origination. Moreover, here, merely by the manner of two, the mere manifestation of emptiness and the mere consciousness are of one taste in all respects. These varieties exist in the ultimate sense, because the ultimate is the wisdom that transcends the world, and the meaning is its object. Therefore, it should be fully understood that they do not exist in the manner of being truly encompassed by two, because clinging to their very existence is the root of all faults. The deluded nature of possessing the appearance of duality should be thoroughly abandoned, because the root of all suffering is precisely the distinction in the midst of delusion. The nature of emptiness by means of two should be made manifest, because making it manifest is precisely true wisdom, the antidote to all delusions, and therefore, gradually, by means of the great liberation of great bliss, it accomplishes the attainment of mastering all the qualities of the Buddha. That great liberation is also the ultimate truth, because it is the supreme fruit. Moreover, this true wisdom is the supreme meaning to be sought after. Having spoken of the uniqueness of suchness by this, the occasion of the suchness of the lineage is spoken of, beginning with 'mother' and so forth. 'Mother' means one who has the intention to benefit. 'Sister' means loving-kindness.
