Commentary on the First Chapter. Commentary on the First Chapter. First, Explanation of the Chapter on the Vajra Family. In Sanskrit: Śrī Hevajra pañjikā nāma muktikā avali. In Tibetan: Called the "Garland of Pearls, Commentary on the Difficult Points of Glorious Hevajra". Homage to the Glorious Vajra Ḍākinī! By placing the feet, making the four earths crumble; by laughing intensely, making the earth-holders overturn. With rays of the eyes and the sound of victory banners and bells, destroying beings and then reviving them. Pacifying those who are proud with arrogance, holding the means of showing terrifying rituals. May the essence of the three secrets of the Victorious Ones, the dance of Heruka, protect you! Those who follow the scriptures in accordance with the measure, Because it is clear and extremely beautiful, Like a garland of pearls, pleasing to the mind, I shall explain the difficult points of Hevajra. Those without faith are the sound of the chief, The place of union with the deity, Why is it that the omniscient is the measure? Reverence does not transform omniscience. The Buddhas act as if they have not acted, They speak of what has not been spoken as spoken. To the unsurpassed, unerring Sugata, Both are equal to slander. The Buddhas have spoken of many benefits, Beings take them as they think. Thus, in this commentary, when explaining the meaning, It is done by entering with desire. Without realization, there is no hearing, Without hearing, there is no contemplation. If both are lost, there is no yoga, Without yoga, there will be no accomplishment. Thus, in this tantra, for a long time, Afflicted by intense desire, The garland of pearls in the heart, Snatch it away with this threaded line. Some say that the words of introduction, such as "Thus have I heard," are another tantra because they are abbreviated. Others say that this is an excerpt from the second chapter of the great tantra, and that it has been compiled and placed as it is there, and that it has been compiled here together with the words of introduction. Others say that this is another meaning of the great secret supreme. That is correct, but it is not reasonable to say it at first, and what will be explained below depends on the letters. Therefore, applying what will be explained to another meaning, connecting it with another meaning, is for the purpose of creating wonder in the minds of the foolish. Therefore, the first

This introductory phrase was also spoken by the Blessed One. Monks, my teachings should be compiled as follows: 'Thus I have heard.' Therefore, the compiler said: 'Thus I have heard.' One teaches the Dharma having understood what one has heard, and one compiles having heard from the one who teaches. Therefore, the word 'heard' indicates the compiler. If it is not heard directly, or heard in another way, then the compiler is not reliable. To clarify these two, the words 'Thus I' are spoken. Among these, 'I' means that I have heard from the one who teaches, and not from other hearings. 'Thus' means to compile as it is, meaning that I have heard only thus, and not otherwise. To show the appropriate circumstance, sometimes the teacher resides, and the appropriate retinue gathers, therefore the beginning is spoken as 'At one time,' and so on. 'At one time' means at some time. The Blessed One refers to the Vajra Holder with the body of Hevajra. He is the vanquisher because he possesses the six qualities such as power. As it is said: 'Power and beauty, glory and fame, wisdom and diligence, perfectly possessing these six, is called vanquishing.' The one who has vanquished possesses this, therefore he is called the Blessed One. 'Resides' means the dwelling of the Buddhas. The dwelling of the Buddhas is also of four types: residing through conduct, residing through teaching the Dharma, residing through entering into samadhi, and residing through inner perfect concentration. The cause of establishing universal equality is residing, the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, are always established in equality. Therefore, the bodily activity of the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, is residing through conduct. Whatever little speech activity of theirs is residing through teaching the Dharma. Whatever mental activity of theirs, entering into samadhi or the ordinary establishment of equality, is residing through entering into samadhi. What the Buddhas see
