From the cessation of the outer breath to the cessation of the inner breath, there are three or four days, or five or six days, in which one remains in luminosity as if in a faint. If one has been very familiar beforehand and is well accustomed, then consciousness will dissolve into the expanse of clear light. Even if it does not dissolve, it is superior to many years of diligent practice at other times. If one transmigrates from that (state) to the bardo (intermediate state), then the alaya consciousness (kun gzhi rnam shes, the basis of all consciousness) together with the karmic winds, along with the two bindus (thig le, drops, essences), departs from the body. At that time, the red bindu will appear above, and the white bindu will appear from the path below. At that time, it is called awakening from the faint. In the bardo (bardo, intermediate state), a body of habituation is formed, and in that instant, it is accomplished like a dream body. At this time, cherish the profound instructions of the bardo. Beforehand, repeatedly think that you are in the bardo, and practice the methods of determining whether you are truly in the bardo or not. Practice observing whether there is a shadow, whether familiar people recognize you, and whether you are obstructed by rocks, etc. If you are very familiar, then in the bardo, you will know yourself that you are in the bardo, or others will say to you, 'You are in the bardo,' and thus you will know that you are in the bardo. If it is not like that, just as one does not know that one is dreaming when dreaming, the beings of the bardo will not recognize that they are in the bardo. They will think that they have not died and are still influenced by habits as before. Therefore, at that time, it is very important to recognize that you are in the bardo. Having recognized it, cherish practicing the previous instructions. There, for whatever clear light appears, simply abide and look at it in a non-grasping state. If you are not distracted and remain single-pointedly focused, you will be free from fear and dissolve into the clear light itself. In all stages of death and the bardo, it is very important to have a firm self-awareness, or for others to repeatedly give profound instructions. If you do not attain liberation even in the bardo, you will be born into a family of practitioners, endowed with the ability to practice yoga. Through familiarity with these, you will eventually go to the supreme realm. Even if you have not practiced for a long time, if you have a firm conviction in the experience of the dharmadhatu, and you abandon non-virtue and do not break your vows, then through repeatedly familiarizing yourself with the clear light of death and the clear light of the bardo, you will definitely attain liberation after seven lifetimes; do not have any doubt about this. Why is this so? Because Avalokiteśvara (spyan ras gzigs, the bodhisattva of compassion), as a reliable witness and guarantor, has definitely said so, and this is confirmed by reasoning based on scripture. Apart from these, most other profound instructions on transference and the bardo rarely allow one to see the goal of transference—the clear light dharmakaya (chos sku, the body of truth). Even if one sees it, it is difficult to recognize that it is the dharmakaya. Those goals of transference are... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Merely by thinking and imagining, one presumes that consciousness has been transferred. Therefore, the preciousness of the Clear Light Tathāgatagarbha (如来藏) lies in its ability to distinguish the sudden defilements in consciousness. Hence, this method is supremely excellent, and it must be kept strictly secret from those who are not vessels. For those who are vessels, it should be transmitted gradually with strict seals, and not arbitrarily. Through diligence in this, may all the merits and all the sacred objects accumulated in the three times of past, present, and future, by the great blessing power of the Tathāgatagarbha, may the consciousness of myself and others be transferred into the Dharmadhatu (法界). Through diligently practicing the swift and easy near-path mantra, may the Alaya Consciousness (阿赖耶识) together with the breath, quickly cease, thereby attaining the five fundamental wisdoms (五智), and benefiting beings with the manifested body. Deeply knowing that samsara (轮回) is suffering, may the afflictions that cause samsara, together with the breath, quickly cease, thereby diligently practicing the supreme path, may one quickly attain the ultimate truth of the Cessation of Suffering (灭谛). Deeply knowing that the completely imputed nature (遍计所执) is mere conceptualization, may the suffering of the dependent nature (依他起性) together with the breath, be able to cease, thereby diligently practicing the supreme method, may one attain the perfectly established nature (圆成实性), liberating all beings. The outer and inner conventional appearances are shells of sudden defilements, may one rely on the profound method that can destroy the life force and the downward-moving wind (下行气), quickly attain the supreme and ultimate essence of Suchness. May I, at all times and places, understand all the teachings of the Tathagatas, the profound intentions and ultimate truths of the Three Turnings of the Wheel of Dharma (三转法轮) and the Four Classes of Tantras (密续), and proclaim them to beings at all times and places. This method is extremely profound and secret, making it very difficult to record completely in writing, but at the request of the great Khenchen Rinpoche, it was briefly recorded by Gyalkhampa, who possesses the Four Reliances. To prevent it from falling into the hands of those who are not vessels, this book must be kept strictly secret. Failure to do so violates the vows. Om (嗡), Ah (阿), Hum (吽), Hoh (霍), Ham (杭), Kshah (恰)! This version is an old edition from Drenak Chu, a woodblock print with 515 pages, and the Dzamthang version. Table of Contents: Concise Instructions on the Practice of Phowa (颇瓦法). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
